Carrigaline trio power Cork football Team of the Week

The group stages have come and gone in both codes, and it was another weekend that offered no shortage of spills and thrills, spearheaded by some exceptional individual displays. So here it is as always, your Echo Cork football Team of the Week, spanning the top three grades.

Goalkeeper: Darren Ó Coill (Béal Átha’n Ghaorthaidh) 0-4 (2 tpf)

Three point-blank saves across the hour against Dohenys and a couple of two-point frees to go with it, Darren Ó Coill was the Ballingeary hero as they stamped their ticket in the knockout stages of the SAFC.

Corner-back: James Kelleher (Newcestown) 0-1

A very good display against St Michael’s, Kelleher was very assured defensively when the Carbery club needed some stability. His turnover was the catalyst for a David Buckley score that increased Newcestown’s lead to seven just before the break, and he had even added a point himself earlier in the game.

Full-back: Harry Wixted (Bishopstown) 0-1

Excellent at full-back for Bishopstown, leading from the defence in their win over Clyda. He even raised a white flag with a soccer-esque volleyed effort.

Corner-back: Ed Leahy (Aghada)

Had the tough task of marking Castletownbere sharpshooter Fintan Fenner and did well, as Aghada won to ease any relegation worries.

Half-back: Pádraig Britton (Mallow) 0-2

Clipped two crucial points for Mallow as they brought down the reigning champions, and was a constant presence down the flank for the north Cork side. Their result and performance were superb, but not enough to make it out of the group.

Centre-back: Brian O’Driscoll (Carrigaline) 0-2 (1 tp)

Back to the team and back with a superb showing, Brian O’Driscoll was incredible for Carrigaline as they went three from three in the group to go straight through to the semi-finals. Dictated the game from start to finish, won a plethora of frees and led Carrig to a superb victory over Douglas.

Half-back: Mark Collins (Castlehaven)

Excellent as he is every week without fail for the Haven, Mark Collins was once again to the fore as they dispatched Knocknagree and marched on to the quarter-finals.

Midfielder: Jack McCarthy (Carrigaline) 0-3

Immense in midfield for Carrigaline. Worked tirelessly all game and contributed an impressive 0-3 as they beat out Douglas.

Midfielder: Conor Cahalane (Castlehaven) 1-5

Ran the show from the middle of the park for the Haven. Had a long ball fly into the net and contributed some stunning scores, but was absolutely stellar in his work ethic out of possession, too.

Half-forward: Michael O’Rourke (Mallow) 0-4 (1 tp)

Kicked 0-4 and assisted plenty more, O’Rourke was the heartbeat of Mallow’s win against the Barrs. A fantastic performance.

Centre-forward: Ed Ó Mír (Naomh Abán) 0-9 (2 tp, 0-1 f)

Continued his fine form for the Gaeltacht side, top scoring once again. A very impressive 0-8 from play, including a couple of brilliant two pointers as they saw off Nemo’s second string to top their group.

Half-forward: Cathal Vaughan (Uibh Laoire) 0-6 (1 tpf, 1 tp, 0-1 f)

The Joneses have been the headline grabbers for Uibh Laoire in their PIFC campaign so far, but Cathal Vaughan was exceptional again here. Clipped 0-6 against Rockchapel, the former Cork senior was top class once more.

Corner-forward: Brian Coakley (Carrigaline) 0-9 (3 tpf, 1 tp)

The metronome up front for Carrigaline, and what a performance Coakley produced against Douglas. Dead accurate from outside the arc – both from play and placed balls – and will be crucial if they are to reach the PSFC decider.

Full-forward: Seán McEvoy (Clonakilty) 2-4

A dominant Clon display spearheaded by the incision of Seán McEvoy, who grabbed a very impressive 2-4 from play. Excellent in the first half to put his side in the ascendancy, and grabbed Clon’s third and his second goal in the second half to seal it.

Corner-forward: Arthur Coakley (Bantry Blues) 2-3 (1-0 pen, 0-2 f)

Came up trumps for Bantry when they needed a hero, slotting home the late penalty which condemned Glanmire to the relegation playoff. Started the game with their first score and was a constant threat throughout, and buried his first goal to put his side well ahead.
