Sydney Swans players set to face police interviews over alleged Melbourne hotel sexual assault

Victoria Police detectives reportedly plan to fly to Sydney this week to interview Swans players as part of their ongoing investigation into sexual assault allegations stemming from an incident at the Pullman East Melbourne hotel last month.

The Herald Sun on Tuesday morning reported that detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad will this week “seek to interview” Sydney players who were in a hotel room with exotic dancers where it’s alleged multiple sexual assaults took place.

Sydney’s season last month spiralled into crisis, with a post-Round 23 win celebration over Essendon in Melbourne ultimately triggering a Victoria Police investigation and the dramatic standing down of five players: Riley Bice, Nick Blakey, Isaac Heeney, James Jordon and Chad Warner.

The Swans’ suspensions were imposed for breaches of the club’s behavioural standards and were separate from the Victoria Police investigation into the sexual assault allegations.

Heeney, who has deleted his Instagram account that had 115,000 followers, has reportedly been the focus of the police probe so far, but the Herald Sun claimed on Tuesday another player “may be asked under caution about his activities in the hotel room”.

The three women who performed inside the room have made sexual assault allegations, while they’ve also engaged civil lawyers.

The five Swans players are believed to have denied any criminal wrongdoing.

Foxfooty.com.au is not suggesting any of the men in the room engaged in the conduct alleged, only that it has been alleged. No formal police interviews, at this stage, have taken place, nor have any charges been laid in relation to the alleged sexual assault.

The latest development comes after multiple reports claimed four Swans officials, who were not in the hotel room at the centre of the police investigation and have not been accused of inappropriate behaviour, voluntarily provided their accounts to police.

The four officials named by outlets were coach Dean Cox, football boss Leon Cameron, head of welfare Brett Kirk and media and communications boss Tom Chadwick. Cameron, Kirk and Chadwick reportedly travelled back to Sydney with the five Swans players in two cars after news of the police probe emerged.
