Novak Djokovic’s surprising record at the Laver Cup and how it compares to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic has not found that much success in his two appearances at the Laver Cup.

Djokovic will not be playing the Laver Cup this year, but he did represent Team Europe in tennis' version of the Ryder Cup in both 2018 and 2022.

The 2022 edition was particularly significant for Djokovic, as it saw Laver Cup co-founder Roger Federer officially retire from professional tennis.

While Djokovic is a 24-time Grand Slam champion and has beaten every top player in history, his Laver Cup record is not quite as impressive.

Djokovic's first ever Laver Cup match actually came alongside Federer, as they played doubles together against the Team World pairing of Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson. Despite being two of the greatest singles players of all time, Djokovic and Federer were beaten 6(5)-7, 6-3, [10-6] by Sock and Anderson.

Just a day later, Djokovic would be beaten again by Anderson, but this time in singles, and he was scheduled to play another singles match at the Laver Cup that year against Nick Kyrgios, but this never happened as Team Europe had already secured victory.

Djokovic would have a better experience when he returned to the Laver Cup in 2022, when he won his singles match against Frances Tiafoe, and also won a doubles match alongside Matteo Berrettini against Sock and Alex de Minaur. Djokovic would then lose a crucial singles match against Felix Auger-Aliassime, and he has not played at the Laver Cup since then.

Having played five matches at the Laver Cup in his career, Djokovic has a 40% win record at the event. This is a stark difference to his former rival Federer, who has won two thirds of his matches in the Laver Cup.

Federer never lost a single match at the Laver Cup in his career, with all four of his losses coming in doubles matches, including one alongside Djokovic.

Rafael Nadal has a more similar record to Djokovic from his three Laver Cup appearances. Like Federer, Nadal has a positive record in singles, but his doubles results have dragged his overall win-loss record at the Laver Cup down to 42.9%.

Who has won the most matches in Laver Cup history?

Despite Djokovic, Federer and Nadal having won a combined 66 Grand Slam titles, none of them have won the most matches at the Laver Cup.

That record actually belongs to the aforementioned Sock, who has won 10 matches in his four previous Laver Cup appearances. Nine of Sock's 10 wins have come in doubles, which enabled him to contribute a total of 19 points to Team World.

While Sock has won the most total matches in Laver Cup history, Alexander Zverev has won the most matches in singles.

Zverev has made more appearances than any other player in Laver Cup history, winning seven of his 11 singles matches.

Now as a two-time Grand Slam champion, Zverev will make his seventh appearance at the Laver Cup this year, as he leads the line for Team Europe against Team World in London. The 2026 Laver Cup takes place between September 25-27.
