Live updates as Eddie Howe's Magpies take on Forest at the City Ground looking to keep their European hopes alive in the final weeks of the season

Newcastle United head to the City Ground to face Nottingham Forest today knowing a win would just about keep them in the race for a European place next season. Eddie Howe's men felt they turned the corner with the victory over Brighton last weekend, but face a Forest side who have hit form.

Vitor Pereira's side were beaten 4-0 by Aston Villa in midweek in their Europa League semi-final, but have recorded valuable Premier League wins in recent weeks, notably a 3-0 success at Chelsea last Monday.

Howe must decide whether to recall Anthony Gordon to the starting line-up, while Kieran Trippier is expected to replace the injured Lewis Mlley at right-back.

Again, his exact position is unclear but Hall is back in the side after not starting each of Newcastle's last two matches. It feels like a boost for Newcastle to have one of their players of the season back in the side.

No Gordon an indicator on his future

Anthony Gordon's absence from the team, in light of the fact Joe Willock has come out of the side, feels significant in light of talk around his future. It will be interesting to see if Eddie Howe turns to him from the bench in the second half.

What has been key in recent days for me is that there has been no denial whatsoever from either the player's camp or United that he is in talks with Bayern Munich.

There is interest too, but the reality is, playing Gordon is risking what looks like a certain sale. If Newcastle get Gordon done early enough it opens up other deals for Newcastle.

The flip side is he goes to the World Cup and does well and Newcastle miss out on a potentially bigger fee.

Nick Woltemade recall

It is Woltemade's first start since the derby defeat to Sunderland back in March. The German international has not started any of the last four matches and it feels like his big chance to prove his worth again from the start. What role he plays will be interesting but Eddie Howe has listened to the calls to recall him to the side.

I’ll be honest, I thought Forest were very disappointing against Villa. Villa played well but Forest made it so easy for them, they badly missed Morgan Gibbs-White. Newcastle and Eddie really needed that win last week. The owners have come out and publicly backed him, that’s nice to see but in modern football, who knows how much that actually means! I’m leaning towards the draw. One to watch- Elliot Anderson going against his boyhood club here, he could run the show from midfield.

Tough one to predict, depending on what happens with Nottingham Forest in Europe. I mean, Morgan Gibbs-White is flying. I know he got an injury the other day, whether he'll be fit or not, we'll have to wait and see. But again, I think, given the circumstances, with Forest in Europe and Newcastle winning last weekend, I'm going to say a draw.

OPINION

Dan Burn - Ignore the noise

There has been a lot said and spoken about Newcastle's season and the poor run of form they've had in the Premier League but defender Dan Burn is shutting out the noise ahead of the run-in.

"I have learned over my career not to listen to it. Everybody is going to talk regardless of what happens. We have been on an upward trajectory in the last few seasons, so it does feel like a little bit of a dip. So now we are looking to finish the season strongly."

Forest injury issues

As for the hosts, they are dealing with several injuries, with Ola Aina, Dan Ndoye, Ibrahim Sangare, Callum Hudson‑Odoi, Murillo and Morgan Gibbs‑White all missing the Europa League semi‑final against Aston Villa on Thursday.

The six players are all doubts for Sunday's clash, while Willy Boly, Nicolo Savona and John Victor are confirmed absentees.

What do we know so far? Well, Tino Livramento and Fabian Schar are out of contention due to their ongoing issues and face a race to play again this season. With Lewis Miley breaking his leg in a freak training ground incident, there will be at least one change from the starting XI that beat Brighton 3-1. Kieran Trippier could come in at right back.

Elsewhere, Newcastle have a relatively clean bill of health. Eddie Howe must decide whether to recall Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon to his starting XI after the England duo were on the bench vs Brighton. William Osula looks set to hold off competition from Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa though and lead the line.
