Ecuador 0-0 Curacao

Tahith Chong loses his marker and leads a three-man counter-attack, but his end product leaves a lot to be desired.

He looks to knock the ball across to a teammate, but scuffs his pass and Ecuador recover.

Not long after, there's another chance for Curacao as Sharel Floranus charges up the pitch, but the centre-back fires over from range.

One of the heaviest debut defeats

Ecuador v Curacao (01:00 BST)

The smallest nation to take part in a World Cup in terms of population and land mass, Curacao’s debut on the biggest stage was the mismatch it appeared on paper, resulting in a 7-1 thrashing by four-time winners Germany.

Advocaat opted for a back four in the opening fixture despite using a back five in the warm-up friendlies and arguably paid the price for misplaced ambition.

Defeat by a six-goal margin was the heaviest by any World Cup debutant since 1954 and the joint-second heaviest on debut in the history of this tournament.

It may well result in a more pragmatic approach for a team who cannot afford to lose, lest their fairy tale story of reaching a first World Cup be over at the earliest juncture.

We're not in Kansas

Ecuador v Curacao (01:00 BST)

Tonight's game takes place in Kansas City - which if you didn't know, isn't in Kansas.

Kansas is the state on the other side of the Kansas-Missouri border, tonight's Kansas City is in Missouri.

Confusingly, there's also a Kansas City in Kansas. But that's not where we are tonight. Got it?

Kansas City's location in America's Midwest makes it perhaps one of the less glamorous host cities at the 2026 World Cup but 'KC' has plenty of football pedigree, plus one of the USA's most distinctive and atmospheric venues – a welcome contrast to many of the ultra-modern stadia at the tournament.

Normally known as Arrowhead Stadium, this open-air bowl was inaugurated in 1972 and is steeped in gridiron history. Home to four-time Super Bowl winners the Kansas City Chiefs, it is the third oldest ground in current use by an NFL team, though it was given a major facelift in 2010, when a $375m renovation project was completed.

It is famed for its acoustics, having been deliberately designed to amplify crowd noise and channel sound towards the field.
