Flag football: Team USA edges out Mexico 35-34 in Super Bowl Week rivalry rematch

USA pulled away late to defeat Mexico 35-34 during a Super Bowl Week flag football exhibition match on Thursday, 5 February in San Francisco that felt anything but friendly.

Mexico held its own for the entire first half, trading stops and scores in a game that reflected the long-standing rivalry between the two sides.

The momentum shifted after halftime when Team USA’s defense came up with two key interceptions. The second sealed the win.

There was added weight put on this rivalry since the two teams were named co-champions at the 2025 Americas Continental Championships in Panama, where the gold-medal game was cancelled due to bad weather.

Even with the exhibition label, neither side backed off. There was clear respect for the talent on both rosters and an understanding that this matchup is only going to get bigger on the road to Los Angeles in 2028 where the sport makes its debut.

Bay Area native Tyler Davis said playing in front of family and friends made the night even more special as the U.S. side of the stands filled up early.

Six-time world champion quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette III called the game an honor and a privilege, adding that moments like this help show the world what flag football is all about.

Team USA already has its Olympic spot secured as the host nation. The remaining teams will be decided in August, with no easy games expected moving forward.
