The latest Chelsea-related transfer news with the Blues seemingly missing out on a move for Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, who is on his way to Liverpool instead

Jeremy Jacquet has chosen Liverpool ahead of Chelsea with the Rennes defender now set to move to Anfield at the end of the season.

Late on Sunday evening, the Reds struck a deal, understood to be worth a total of £60million, with the French club for the 20-year-old defender to move to Merseyside in the summer.

The Blues had been in talks with Rennes for the past two-or-so weeks over a deal to sign Jacquet.

Stamford Bridge officials wanted the 20-year-old centre-back to join immediately but the French club were reluctant to sanction a departure midway through the campaign.

Talks continued with Rennes over a summer move and Jacquet himself was said to have given Chelsea an initial green light, though Liverpool have swooped in and hijacked the deal. Jacquet now seems set to move to the Reds in a few months' time.

Jacquet had a choice between Chelsea and Liverpool and opted with the latter because he believes there is a better chance of regular first-team football at Anfield, football.london understands.

Chelsea are expected to recall Mamadou Sarr from his loan spell at Strasbourg today to bolster Liam Rosenior's options at Stamford Bridge, while the club have dismissed interest in fellow centre-back Josh Acheampong.

The competition for places, not only in the short-term but also in the long-term, at Chelsea is big and Jacquet believes there is a clearer route with Liverpool.

Sarr has been a significant part of the Strasbourg team this season, both under Rosenior and now Gary O'Neil.
