Homecoming for Galway to be held after All-Ireland win

A homecoming celebration will be held this afternoon for the Galway Ladies' Football team following their All-Ireland victory.

The side beat Kerry by one point at Croke Park yesterday.

The winning team will be honoured at Tuam Stadium later in an event organised by Galway County Council.

The team visited CHI Crumlin Hospital with the Brendan Martin Cup this morning.

The players were delighted to share their celebrations with the children present. Posing for photos with their silverware alongside patients and staff.

Vice captain Olivia Divilly reflected on how some of the squad had long wished to be a part of the beloved annual tradition.

"Every year you would be watching other teams come to Temple Street or Crumlin and you would love to have the opportunity to do that yourself," she said.

"To be here today and to meet all the children, seeing how brave and resilient they all are, it’s brilliant."

It was their final stop in Dublin before heading back west for the homecoming celebrations.

Chairman of the County Galway Ladies Football Association John Devlin said the team are looking forward to meeting their young supporters, especially the young girls, who turned up in big numbers for the semi-final and the final.

"This is just the beginning. This team, I don't think is going anywhere. They're in good hands, you know, so we have no worries whatsoever. I don't think anyone is talking about leaving or giving up yet," he added.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr Devlin said: "Gates open at 4pm, so there'll be entertainment from there on in, and hopefully the team will arrive at five o'clock and we'll see where it takes us."

"Nail-biting, edge-of-the-seat stuff, you know. A cruel way probably for Kerry to lose, but it's nice to be on that end for us - we've suffered a few times, a few occasions, but it's nice to get over the line now," he added.
