Wimbledon 2026 LIVE: Serena and Venus Williams forced to cancel doubles comeback at last minute

The legendary Williams sisters were set to return to Wimbledon as a doubles pairing but a ‘heartbroken’ Serena has been forced to withdraw due to a knee injury

Serena Williams’ Wimbledon comeback has been brought to a premature end after the 44-year-old was forced to withdraw from her first-round doubles match with sister Venus Williams due to a knee injury.

With a combined age of 90, the tennis legends were set to play their first match together in four years against Solana Sierra and Camilla Osorio. Serena returned to singles on Tuesday, but injured her knee in a defeat to Maya Joint.

“I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles,” Williams posted on Instagram. “Coming back to compete again has been a gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant the world to me. I did everything I could to be ready, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready to compete.”

Elsewhere, Alexandra Eala made more history for the Philippines as the 21-year-old rising star stunned defending Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek to extend her record run to the fourth round. Eala, the 29th seed, won 7-6 6-2 in two hours and 14 minutes for the biggest win of her blossoming career as well as the most significant upset of this year’s Championships.

Meanwhile, Arthur Fery, the last British player left standing in the singles, kept his Wimbledon run alive with a stunning five-set win over Zizou Bergs to reach the fourth run for the first time, where he will play another wildcard in Grigor Dimitrov. In the all-American on Centre Court, former Australian Open champion Madison Keys knocked out last year’s runner-up Amanda Anisimova.

What's next at Wimbledon? Sunday's order of play

Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner remain on a collision course at Wimbledon while Naomi Osaka faces Aryna Sabalenka in a fourth-round blockbuster on day seven of the Championships.

Osaka is through to the last 16 of Wimbledon for the first time and battles current world No 1 Sabalenka in a meeting of four-time grand slam meetings. Sabalenka has won all three matches they have played this season, including in the last 16 of last month’s French Open, but Osaka carries blistering form onto the grass.

Coco Gauff, meanwhile, faces a tough test against Belinda Bencic, and there is an all-Czech contest between former champion Barbora Krejcikova and 10th seed Karolina Muchova.

Arthur Fery soaking in the biggest win of his career

After beating Zizou Bergs in five sets, Arthur Fery will enter the world’s top 100 for the first time on Monday, earning him entry to the US Open main draw.

“It's a really special moment. I can't really fully process it yet. When I'm playing this well and having these kind of results, it was only a matter of time till I broke the top 100.

“It's still a significant milestone. Doing it here is incredibly special for me. It's my home tournament. It's where I grew up. It's very special.”

On how he will recover physically after playing the longest match of his career to reach the last-16, Fery said he was “buzzing” off adrenaline.

“First five-setter, longest match that I've ever played, first time breaking into the top 100, first second week in a slam, all at home, five minutes from where I grew up. It's a great story for me.”

Grigor Dimitrov rewrites Wimbledon story to set up wildcard clash with Arthur Fery

Grigor Dimitrov made an emotional winning return to Centre Court as he defeated Matteo Berrettini in five sets to set up an all-wildcard clash with British Arthur Fery at Wimbledon.

Last year, Dimitrov’s Wimbledon campaign ended in a painful retirement as he led eventual champion Jannik Sinner by two sets in the last-16 on Centre Court. It was the fifth consecutive grand slam where the 35-year-old had retired from a grand slam due to injury, with the pectoral train forcing him to also miss the US Open, a withdrawal which ended a streak of 58 consecutive grand slam appearances.

"After the way I exited last year, I'll never know what would've happened, but guess what this year I'm back here and I'm able to rewrite everything again,” Dimitrov said after his 6-3 6-4 3-6 5-7 6-3 win against Matteo Berrettini, a victory that lasted three hours and 30 minutes.

Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova knocked out in third round

There will be no Wimbledon redemption for Amanda Anisimova, who opened up on a “really rough few months” following defeat to Madison Keys.

“Obviously struggling with my forehand a lot lately. Just something that I'm still trying to figure out. Jjust not easy to go out there and my level being that low. A lot of things for me to figure out.

“Normally, I'd be motivated and would just look at it as another opportunity going forward. But after the last few months, it's really hard to see a silver lining, because it's been really, really tough.”

GAME, SET, MATCH! Grigor Dimitrov beats Matteo Berrettini in five

Looks what it means to Grigor Dimitrov! On Centre Court last year, Dimitrov retired injured from his quarter-final against Jannik Sinner while leading the world No 1 by two sets.

It forced him to miss the rest of the season and his ranking plummeted as a result. Receiving a wildcard this year, Dimitrov has knocked out 15th seed Jakub Mensik and now prevailing in five sets against Matteo Berrettini.

That was his first appearance on Centre Court since his injury against Sinner. Will he return there on Monday to play Arthur Fery, in the battle between two wildcards for a place in the quarter-finals?

Madison Keys thrives on first Centre Court appearance to beat Amanda Anisimova

Madison Keys says other players in the locker room were “shocked” to learn that she had yet to play on Centre Court. Well, the former Australian Open champion settled pretty well as she knocked out last year’s runner-up Amanda Anisimova 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

“Being on Centre Court here was one big one. I'm glad that I finally got to check that off of the list,” she said.

Keys, who won at Eastbourne last week, now faces ninth seed Linda Noskova for a place in the quarter-finals.

Wimbledon rises for Arthur Fery, the last Brit standing

Serving to stay in the biggest match of his life, as the shadows began to lengthen across Wimbledon’s Court 18 and fans climbed onto fold-out seats on the balcony and clambered onto benches to look down below, Arthur Fery was suddenly ground to a halt. A third nosebleed of the match stopped Fery in the his tracks and forced him to think.

He had been battling Belgium’s Zizou Bergs for over four hours for a place in the last-16, scrapping from the brink after being a double-break down in the fourth set and a single break down in the fifth. Fery trailed 4-1 in both sets, but the deeper a hole the British wildcard faced, the tougher he fought, and the higher he climbed.

Once again, Fery managed to block out the distractions, with his epic 2-6 7-5 2-6 7-6 (3) 7-6 (10/5) over Bergs ensuring there will be a British player in the fourth round of Wimbledon.
