But what followed in her post-match press conference overshadowed the 6-1 4-6 6-4 win for the former world No.1

The Polish star was grilled by a reporter on the drama that erupted between Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko on Thursday..

The reporter asked whether the clash had exposed double standard in sports.

“Yesterday, when home girl (Ostapenko) went and told her (Townsend) she was uneducated and arrogant, what does that tell you about this sport in women’s sports?”,” the reporter asked.

Swiatek replied diplomatically: “I can’t speak about every sport, because I don’t have enough knowledge, you know. We’re in this environment, we’re in the tennis world, we’re thinking about tennis mostly.

“But, you know, I think obviously the world’s changed throughout the years, and I know that there has been some issue yesterday, but honestly, I was so focused, I had (an) early match, so I wasn’t really -- I’m not caught up on that. I’m probably going to catch up today.

“But you can’t really judge from (the) behavior of one person the whole community.

The reporter continued: “Do you see that there is a double standard when it comes to women’s sports in terms of how you reacted or acted?”

Swiatek then added: “I can’t speak about the whole (of) women’s sports.

“I’m a tennis player. I’m, like, 24. I haven’t been playing soccer, I haven’t been playing, I don’t know, basketball.“I don’t know how it is in all women’s sports. You have to ask someone experienced. Probably some people that have been working in different sports.”

The already tense press conference then took a bizarre turn.

A Polish reporter asked if Swiatek would put beads in her hair, in a similar fashion to what Naomi Osaka has done.

The question clearly angered Swiatek who let the reporter know what she thought, putting her head in her hands in frustration.

“What kind of question is that, excuse me? If I wanted to weave beads in my hair? No. What’s going on here?”

SINNER STORMS INTO THIRD ROUND

Jannik Sinner kept his bid to win back-to-back US Open titles firmly on track with an emphatic second round demolition of Australia’s Alexei Popyrin on Thursday.

The Italian world number one needed just two hours and one minute to dispatch Popyrin 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

Sinner -- who only dropped four games in his first round win over Vit Kopriva on Tuesday -- was similarly brisk against Popyrin.

The 24-year-old broke Popyrin five times as he moved through the gears against his opponent, ranked 36th in the world.

Sinner faces Canadian 27th seed Denis Shapovalov in the third round on Saturday. “Obviously I try to play the best tennis I can, the first round match is always different compared to the further you go (in the tournament),” Sinner said.

“I’m very happy that I managed these matches as good as I could, when you are up two sets and a break you try to serve as best as you can.

“Today, it felt like neither of us served well but I was returning well and especially on the second serve. I am happy about today, I am aiming to improve on the serve but the rest (of my game) I am quite comfortable with.” Sinner has reached the final of all three Grand Slams this season, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon either side of a defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at the French Open.

He is bidding to become the first man to successfully defend the US Open since Roger Federer won the last of five consecutive titles in 2008
