A rare occurrence — combined with some other upsets — has BYU moving even higher in the national top 25 rankings.

The Cougars beat rival Utah 24-21 Saturday night in just the fourth meeting between the two schools when both teams were ranked.

Entering the contest, BYU was No. 15 in the Associated Press poll and the Utes were 23rd.

Now, the Cougars have their highest ranking in nearly a year following a weekend where nine teams ranked in the AP poll lost.

Where are BYU and Utah ranked in the latest AP and LBM Coaches polls after Week 8?

It’s the highest ranking for BYU since the Cougars beat Utah 22-21 in Week 12 last season and jumped to No. 6 in the College Football Playoff rankings, No. 7 in the AP poll and No. 8 in the Coaches rankings.

Utah (5-2, 2-2 Big 12), following the loss, fell out of both polls. The Utes were ranked No. 23 in the AP poll and No. 22 in the US LBM Coaches rankings last week.

Utah received 40 points in the AP poll, second-most among “others receiving votes,” and 51 in the Coaches rankings, third-most among programs just outside the top 25.
