The last team to create more in a single game in the competition were Manchester United against Brighton and Hove Albion in October 2020 (10).

Successive draws against Crystal Palace and Manchester United have dented Arsenal's start to the campaign.

Their slow starts have proven to be their undoing in previous campaigns as Arsenal's search for another WSL title has gone on for seven years.

'There's nobody better than Chloe Kelly'

It's hard because I know Chloe will want to start more games. I think sometimes it's tough to have that role, not starting and then coming on, but look at what she did in the Euros. She's the player for when you need someone to stand up, she has that confidence. That's great for Sarina Wiegman when you have those players available, there's nobody better than Chloe Kelly when it comes to that role.

'I asked the team to be brave on the ball'

Charlton manager Karen Hills, speaking after her side's fourth defeat in four matches: "I'm so proud of the group of players. We've had a tough start and to play Manchester City here and play the way we did is unbelievable. I'm so proud of them and our character and belief in each other. That performance was the best performance we've had all season.

"We knew set-pieces would be a huge chance for us. We needed to find where the errors were and I thought today we were excellent in both boxes. We were unfortunate when we were attacking, but I thought we defended our box so, so well.

"We knew what their threats were going to be and I thought we dealt with them really, really well. The next level for us is can we score at the other end now.

"I asked the team to be brave on the ball. That was the next level of our performance, an opportunity. I told them it was going to be a test today and we needed to test ourselves against the best. I asked my players to be brave and create opportunities in the final third. The confidence in the players in the front line is growing. I'll keep giving them that belief and hopefully those golden moments will be coming for us."

'Hard not to think of Arsenal game coming up'

Manchester City's Beth Mead, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was difficult. It's hard off the back of a Champions League game. Charlton were really hard to beat today, they defended really well. Our intensity could have been better on the ball but we got the three points.

"I'm just trying to do the right things, recover well and go again. I'm trying to play as many minutes as I can. I'm never going to complain about that."

On moving to Manchester City from Arsenal: "It's a different way of playing, I've been playing in a different role here for most of the games. It's a very good team who like to play football and that's how I like to play. It's been a bit seamless fitting in but very different players to play with you have to get used to."

On being a number 10 more than a number nine: "I'm enjoying the role. I like being on the ball and linking up. Both roles suit me.

"It's an exciting schedule. We have have a few days off which is nice and very rare in football. We'll have a few days off and then prepare for Real Madrid first and then worry about Arsenal after that."

Is she already thinking about the Arsenal game?: "It's hard not to, when you've been there for a long time. Cliche as it is we've got to concentrate on the next game."

'It's crucial for us to have those players'

Manchester City manager, Andree Jeglertz, speaking post-match on today's performance: "It's a good performance, we should have created more scoring chances. Sometimes the last pass wasn't there but there was also players who haven't played together as much today. We have rotated a couple of players.

On Niamh Charles performance: "I'm so happy for Niamh Charles, she's coming in and you can see what a great player she is. I'm looking forward to being able to use her more in the future."

On City being positionally fluid: "Positions today you can't say a player is a fullback because they need to be able to play in different areas. For me it's about how can I get the best out of players like Alex Greenwood, sometimes she plays better in different areas."

On Mary Fowler's performance: "She had a tough last year, this year she's been here from the start, there's no better finisher around the penalty area. She can use both feet. She can play in a lot of spaces so she's like Alex, it's crucial for us to have those players."

'I back myself'

Manchester City's Alex Greenwood, speaking post-match, on her taking the set-piece: "Me and Beth [Mead] practice them a lot in training. I back myself."

On rotating the squad: "I think this season rotation is going to be really important, the players that came off the bench today made a massive difference, our squad depth is brilliant. We wanted this and we're enjoying it."

On not scoring more goals: "The expectation is you come here and win easily but this league doesn't do that anymore and we have to figure out how to break teams down. We've got a few tired bodies this week but it's not an excuse."

On manager Andree Jeglertz giving her fluidity: "When I'm playing in that position the manager gives me more movement on the ball. For me to play in the centre of the pitch and be fluid. I like to do my best for the team."

'Charlton didn't lack any effort'

It's a tale of two teams that are at different stages. City have had a tough week but for Charlton they've had a good game in terms of development.

Sometimes as a team when you get promoted you it's about playing in this way, you can give yourself space to go and attack, they did that for large spells today but lapse in concentration did lead them to lose the game.

That little bit of final quality was lacking today for Chalrton but they didn't lack when it came to effort.
