Where is Mexico vs England playing World Cup round of 16 game?

MEXICO CITY — El Tri is set for one the most important matches in its history. Mexico will host England at Estadio Azteca in a marquee 2026 World Cup round of 16 match on Sunday, July 5.

With a coveted spot in the quarterfinals on the line, the stakes couldn't be higher for either squad. Mexico is looking to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1986, the last time they hosted a World Cup.

England, on the other hand, has their own tortured history with Estadio Azteca from that very same tournament. They were on the receiving end of Diego Maradona's infamous performance in the quarterfinals that saw two of the most iconic goals in the history of the sport: the Hand of God and the Goal of the Century.

In this tournament, Mexico is coming off of a convincing 2-0 win over Ecuador in the round of 32. They dominated Group A before that, accumulating nine points for the first time in their history. El Tri is one of just two teams remaining in the World Cup that has yet to allow a goal.

England, while winners of Group L, has struggled at times against opponents that can be considered inferior such as Ghana and Panama. It looked like they were on the verge of catastrophe in the round of 32 after conceding an early goal to DR Congo, but Harry Kane continued his stellar performance in the tournament with a brace in the final 15 minutes to push the Three Lions ahead.

Mexico rarely loses at El Azteca and looks to be in top form. England is haunted by the stadium and hasn't played their best football. Combine that with the altitude and the atmosphere in Mexico City and England just might find themselves in trouble if they don't play up to their talent.

Where will the Mexico vs. England round of 16 match be played?
