County Championship LIVE: Day three

4
What a day!

#bbccricket

And there ends a truly thrilling day of Championship cricket.

Champions Notts showed their credentials in thrashing Surrey at The Oval while Chris Woakes was the hero as Warwickshire beat Sussex by a single wicket at Edgbaston to keep their own title hopes well and truly alive.

And in Division Two, some all-rounder called Ben Stokes showed his credentials with a second 50 of the game before he demolished Derbyshire with 5-17 with the ball.

The Durham fella could have some future!

But as those sides celebrate, we will rest up and return with the six other games set for gripping final days.

We will be back refreshed and raring to go at 10:45 BST for those.

Until then Championship lovers, it's thanks and hasta luego!

Close of play at Grace Road

Glamorgan 126-5 v Leicestershire (Target: 257)

Glamorgan will return to the crease on the final day of their County Championship meeting with Leicestershire at Grace Road deliciously poised.

Leicestershire, having set their visitors 257 for victory, were indebted to the knock of young Sheridon Gumbs, who hit a career-best 93 earlier in the day. The hosts were then on top when they had Glammy 37-3.

An unbeaten 73 from Kiran Carlson, who led by example having stabilised the Glamorgan chase and will return tomorrow morning to the middle, has hauled the away side back into the reckoning.

One side needs five wickets, the other requires 131 runs.

DURHAM BEAT DERBYSHIRE BY 338 RUNS

Derbyshire 156 & 84 v Durham 283 & 295-6 dec

Durham have won the match emphatically by 339 runs.

A five-wicket haul for Ben Stokes!

Stokes ends the second innings with 5-17. An extraordinary finish to day three across the grounds in the County Championship.

He gets the final wicket of Nick Potts, banging the ball in short, as the tailender can only send the ball to Alex Lees who takes an easy catch at gully.

There is a small delay to see if Brett Randell, who had to retire hurt not out on 13 after being banged on the helmet by a short ball by Stokes, can come out to continue with Shoaib Bashir.

However, it was deemed, with the state of the match, it was not worth the risk and the two sets of players shake hands.

A big, big win for Division Two promotion-chasers Durham who have won inside three days.

NOTTS BEAT SURREY BY 145 RUNS

Surrey 162 & 183 v Notts 184 & 306

That is that! Ollie Pope had some fun in what proved to be the final over of this match, hitting Dillon Pennington for successive fours and a huge straight six as he brought up his century, but Pennington had the final say.

Pope sent one up in the air and Liam Patterson-White took a comfortable catch at mid-wicket.

Notts have been on top since Patterson-White's innings-defining knock on Thursday and they largely remained ahead of their opponents from that point onwards.

Notts, on this evidence, look great value to defend their crown.

Close of play at Cheltenham

Glos 248-3 v Worcs - lead by 131

A fantastic rearguard effort from Gloucestershire in their 80 overs of batting gets them to the close only three down.

All five batters have dug in for the team, with Miles Hammond getting 57, Ollie Price now on 63 and James Bracey joining him in reaching 45 at stumps.

These two have put on an unbroken 58 and the lead has grown to a useful 131.

Worcestershire have a lot of work to do on Sunday if they want to manufacture a win from here.

100 for Ollie Pope

Surrey 177/9 v Notts (Target: 329)

You have to hand it to Ollie Pope. A remarkable knock, in the grand scheme of things.

On a day when Surrey's order have been ripped through by Notts quicks, Pope has remained defiant and has scored comfortably more than half of his side's runs all by himself.

He brings up a century when cutting Dillon Pennington away to the off-side boundary. Surrey are staring down the barrel here, but Pope's class has been on display throughout this forlorn looking chase.

Close of play

Lancashire 24-2 v Northants - target 446

Night-watchman Tom Bailey collects nine from 15 balls to do his job and get through to the close.

A tiniest crumb of comfort from the ashes of a miserable day for Lancashire in which they have lost 10 wickets for 93 runs and seen Northants score close to 300 in their second innings.

A fine 100 from Ricardo Vasconcelos set up the declaration and with wily Ben Sanderson and leggies Yazvendra Chahal and Calvin Harrison to come, it's impossible to imagine anything but an away win on day four.

WARWICKS BEAT SUSSEX BY ONE WICKET

Warwickshire 161 & 206-9 v Sussex 156 & 207

What an incredible finish.

Chris Woakes decides to go for broke and edges to third man for four to secure Warwickshire's third Championship win of the season and ensure they will go into the final five rounds in the thick of the title race.

They seemed to be cruising to victory at 149-3, but then lost four wickets for seven runs, including Vansh Jani for 62 - his maiden half-century in first-class cricket.

Sean Hunt completed a five-for for Sussex who took the ninth Warwickshire wicket with the scores level, but Woakes saw the Bears home to finish on 23 not out.

They take 19 points - and are next at home to defending champions Notts on Thursday - and Sussex three.

Post

Derbyshire 76-7 v Durham (target 423)

End of Ben Stokes' sixth over, just two runs off it.

Matthew Potts is back into the attack from the other end.

A huge appeal for lbw with Potts' second delivery back but it looks like a small inside edge prevents Martin Andersson from being Potts' ninth victim of the match.

WICKET

Harris lbw b Chahal 10 (Lancashire 15-2 - target 446)

Yazvendra Chahal is thrown the ball and the leg-spinner needs only three balls to work his magic.

The batter Northants would choose to remove this evening in Marcus Harris is trapped on the back foot to a ball that turns sharply from outside off-stump.

The Australian thinks it may be drifting down leg, the umpire has other ideas and Lancashire are deep, deep, deep in trouble.
