Leeds Agree Deal 'Close to Limit' of Budget for 'Classy' Maestro

Leeds United have been re-promoted to the Premier League after two years out, and they aim to beat the curse that has seen the past six promoted sides suffer relegation. It will be tough with every non-promoted side in the league now established, having spent at least two consecutive seasons in the top flight, though their transfer business shows ambition in their bid to do so. It has now been reported that Leeds have agreed a deal for Sean Longstaff to make the move from Newcastle United.

Leeds United Agree Deal for Sean Longstaff After Three Rejections

£15 Million Package Agreed

David Ornstein, of The Athletic, has revealed that Leeds United have “reached an agreement in principle” for Longstaff. The package is worth £15 million, with £12 million as a fixed fee and an extra £3 million in potential add-ons. One add-on included is the event in which the Whites finish outside of the relegation zone this campaign.

Ornstein reports that the £15 million package was “close to the limit” that Leeds were willing to pay. This was their fourth proposal, with three others being rejected; the prior bid had been £12 million (£10 million + £2 million). The Yorkshire outfit had “other candidates on their radar”, had they not been able to reach an agreement with Newcastle. Personal terms had already been agreed with the 27-year-old who now looks set to join.

Leeds United’s Transfers Bode Well in Bid for Survival

This is another example of the smart business that Leeds are doing this summer. Their recruitment has been centred around tall, physical players, which will be key in their bid for survival. The Premier League is a hugely physical division; alongside this, height is crucial in defending and attacking set-pieces. The Geordie also has five seasons in which he played a significant amount of football in the English top-flight, alongside two seasons of being around the squad. His experience will be invaluable.

Alongside the “classy” maestro, they have recruited Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Sebastiaan Bornauw, all of whom will tower over opponents. Daniel Farke’s side should be a real contender for survival, though Sunderland’s business has been equally as impressive with the Mackems signing Habib Diarra, Simon Adingra, Enzo Le Fee, Noah Sadiki, Chemsdine Talbi, and Reinildo Mandava.
