Nottingham Forest will be confident they’ve done enough to avoid slipping into the bottom three, but Vitor Perera needs to rouse his players after their Europa League semi-final exit in midweek, as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle land at the City Ground.

Bruno Guimarães is absolutely vital to Newcastle, and I’d be worried if they lost him this summer, which is a real possibility for several of their stars, given how the season has stalled. There hasn’t been much for supporters to be optimistic about, especially in recruitment and the overall vision under Howe.

Guimarães has more goal contributions than any other Newcastle player this season (14 – nine goals, five assists), and he’s managed that despite missing the first few months of 2026 through injury. That tally underlines his importance, and he picked up an assist in the last match, as Newcastle ended a run of five straight defeats against Brighton.

He also has a decent personal record against Forest, having scored in the most recent meeting between the sides at St James’ Park, and he registered three attempts on goal the last time Newcastle visited the City Ground.

Neco Williams to be shown a card

Only Elliot Anderson (seven) has more yellow cards in the Premier League for Forest this season than Neco Williams (six). He’s a versatile player who can operate in either full back role, but this constant switching between positions means Williams can often be caught out of position, as he was a few times in Forest’s bruising 4-0 defeat to Villa in the Europa League.

Williams has also been shown a red card this season, taking his overall tally to seven from 33 league starts. He picked up seven cautions from 28 Premier League starts last season too, so this is a consistent feature of his game, which is interesting given it’s backed by a foul average of just 0.86 per 90, suggesting the fouls Williams commits tend to be worthy of a booking.

Dan Burn to be shown a card

Only Joelinton (10) has more yellows for Newcastle in the Premier League this season than Dan Burn (nine).

Burn should line up at left back here, with Newcastle once again struggling with injuries at full back, and this is where he’s picked up most of his cautions this season, as he battles wingers who often have greater mobility and speed compared to hm.

He’ll be up against either Dilane Bakwa (2.31 fouls won per 90) or Omari Hutchinson (1.37 fouls won per 90), with both players fitting that description of being more agile in those 1v1 battles.

Burn has picked up a yellow card in each of his last two Premier League matches against Brighton and Arsenal, and should expect to be tested regularly down that side of the pitch by either Hutchinson or Bakwa, both of whom can cause him real problems.
