Manchester United have work to do under Ruben Amorim to bounce back from last season and the head coach could make a new addition to his squad and is eyeing a January move

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has had a week to take stock of where his side are at after a difficult start to the season. The Red Devils scraped their first victory of the season against Burnley and the Portuguese coach will know he has more work to do with his team.

Most of his squad will be representing their international sides for the days to come but Amorim's focus will be on another massive match. Manchester City await in a week's time with United in desperate need of some positive momentum.

While the transfer window has not long closed, with United having replenished their frontline and added a new goalkeeper in Senne Lammens, it already appears January is on the horizon. Speculation is already ongoing over what United could do in the next window after missing out on a midfielder.

But Amorim's attention may yet have to be on getting to that stage. United sit ninth after three matches in the Premier League but already out of the Carabao Cup.

Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest news circulating Old Trafford at the moment below.

First team addition

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim could integrate Rhys Bennett into his first team after the player failed to seal a loan move this summer. The defender spent time on loan at Fleetwood Town last season and hoped to gain experience at a higher level this term.

According to the Manchester Evenings News, a loan move was the 'most logical option' next step for Bennett but could now be involved in first team training. It is said the 21-year-old has 'outgrown academy football' and could be ready for step up after a staff member reportedly said: "Rhys has his sights set high."

Man Utd eye January move

Manchester United are considering making a second attempt to sign midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, according to Fichajes. United were knocked back over a loan move in the summer transfer window for the ex-Chelsea star.

Gallagher has played just 84 minutes in Atleti's opening three matches in 2025/26 and remains on the Red Devils' radar it is said. The Spanish outlet claims the club will make a renewed attempt at their next opportunity in January.

The report claims a return to the Premier League would be intriguing for Gallagher.

Panic buy

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has labelled Manchester United's deadline day move for Senne Lammens as a 'panic buy'. The Red Devils added the Belgian star late in the window after a difficult start to the season for Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana.

Foster said on his Fozcast podcast : "Being a goalkeeper for United is the hardest goalkeeping position to play in world football. You need someone with broad shoulders.

"I’ve watched a lot of videos of him [Lammens] on YouTube …and he looks on the eye test like he’s a competent goalkeeper. I’m yet to see what he’s like with the ball at his feet though and I think he’s a panic buy.

"United have probably always got some sort of list of goalkeepers that they look at and they keep tabs on. There will be scouts all over the world…but I don’t think they’ve done an in-depth analysis. A deadline day goalkeeper signing tells me that your club is desperate."
