Jannik Sinner's opening match at the Italian Open was interrupted twice in the second set due to medical emergencies in the crowd. The world No. 1 led Sebastian Ofner by a set and a break when the umpire became aware of an incident in the stands during a changeover at 4-3, and confirmed play would be briefly suspended.

"People are on the way to help," chair umpire Greg Allensworth told Sinner and Ofner, before mounting his chair and addressing the crowd. "Due to a medical issue in the stands, play will be temporarily stopped until it is clear," he said.

The umpire was subsequently heard confirming that first aid was en route. "Just a slight issue in the crowd, hopefully all is okay," commentator Nick Lester reassured viewers. Tournament director and retired Italian tennis star Paoli Lorenzi was spotted courtside as both players and the umpire awaited the resumption of play.

The stoppage lasted approximately six minutes before the match continued, with Sinner serving at 4-3. The disruption momentarily unsettled him, and he dropped the opening point before regrouping to push his advantage to 5-3.

"It's a little bit more challenging for the guy that is serving, a little bit of an interruption," co-commentator Daniela Hantuchova observed. Ofner then held serve to pull it back to 4-5, leaving Sinner to serve out the set.

However, a second medical situation emerged in the crowd just as the top seed began the game. Sinner's first serve went wide, and as he prepared for his second attempt, spectators began shouting and whistling to draw attention to the emergency.

The umpire immediately radioed officials about the developing situation. "Centre court, centre court, we have another medical emergency, upper stands, left, nearside line, in the corner," he communicated.

"Another issue in the crowd by the look of it," Lester observed during commentary. "Hopefully people are around the individual and making sure they are okay, because it's a long way up there. Let's hope they can get up there quickly."

During the interruption, Sinner remained active, conversing with his team and practicing volleys in their direction, while Often seized the moment to consult with his own coaches.

Allensworth subsequently joined Sinner at the baseline, where they remarked on the steepness of the venue.

Competition resumed several minutes later, with Sinner once more losing the opening point of the game. However, he secured the following four points to clinch a 6-3, 6-4 triumph, advancing to the third round.
