What was supposed to be a heartwarming fan encounter at the U.S. Open turned into worldwide embarrassment after a CEO was spotted on tape snatching a signed hat off a child’s hands. The Sextet went viral on social media this weekend, and Piotr Szczerek, CEO of paving company Drogbruk, is left repairing his public image with an all-out apology drive.

The Viral Moment

The commotion took place on Thursday in New York, shortly after Kamil Majchrzak of Poland stunned Russia’s Karen Khachanov in a thrilling victory. While fans surged forward behind barriers to get a bit of memorabilia, Majchrzak extended his hand to a young lad with a new signed cap. Szczerek swooped in, snatching the cap with lightning quickness like a hawk and holding it aloft triumphantly while cameras continued to roll.

The video spread like wildfire. What should have been a child’s dream come true turned into a PR disaster, with fans blasting the businessman for shamelessly robbing a kid on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

Szczerek’s Public Mea Cul

By Monday morning, the outcry could be ignored no further. Szczerek posted a message on social media in which he employed such phrases as “unequivocally” and “full responsibility” to drive home his apology.

“I would like to unequivocally apologize to the young boy, his family, all the fans, and the player himself,” Szczerek posted. “I take full responsibility for my extremely poor judgment and hurtful actions.”

He conceded he “got caught up in the heat of the moment and the joy of victory” and insisted he thought Majchrzak was offering him the hat to pass along to his boys, who were anxious to get autographs. But he did concede that excuse didn’t quite excuse the appearance.

“Regardless of what I believed was happening, the actions I took hurt the young boy and disappointed the fans,” he went on.

Damage Control in Motion

Try to make things right, Szczerek stated he directly returned the hat to the youngster, along with an apology to the family. It was a move to stem the tide of criticism that made him out to be an adult willing to steal from a kid to have bragging rights.

Meanwhile, his own firm, Drogbruk, declined immediate response to a message forwarded to it by WHERE IS THE BUZZ, though PR department’s collective headache has likely still not quite stopped.

Intervention By Majchrz

The tennis pro then intervened himself, sharing pictures to his Instagram story. One was him beaming next to the unidentified boy, Brock, captioned “Hello World, With Brock we wish you a great day!” Another was Majchrzak spoiling the child with gifts and official gear, making sure his memory of his U.S. Open trip wasn’t about a grasping stranger’s hands.
