Should India send full-strength team to Asian Games 2026? Cricket stadium, accommodation under scanner at Aichi-Nagoya

India's announced squad for the 2026 Asian Games might not be the one that actually boards the flight to Japan. Reports suggest the BCCI is seriously considering sending a scaled-down side after raising red flags over just how ready Aichi-Nagoya really is to host the competing teams.

News agency ANI has reported that both the BCCI and the Asian Cricket Council aren't satisfied with what's currently on offer for teams heading to the Games. Rather than take any chances, the board plans to dispatch an observer to Japan before the tournament kicks off, so someone can actually see the setup in person before India commits its strongest XI.

The timeline's tight, too, as the Games open on September 19, with the women's T20 event running September 17-22 and the men's competition following from September 24 to October 3, leaving precious little time to sort out logistics if problems are confirmed.

Asian Games 2026 facilities under scanner

A BCCI source laid out just how basic some of the problems are. Dressing rooms have apparently been arranged inside tents, with washroom facilities sitting some 500 metres away, which is hardly ideal for players needing quick access between innings or during breaks. Hotel room sizes have also come under fire as a separate sticking point.

"BCCI and ACC are not happy with the facilities and arrangements in Japan, and the board will send an observer there. The observer will submit its report to us, and if arrangements are not up to the mark, we could consider sending a B team there," the source told ANI.

The same source went on to detail exactly what was raised with Japanese officials directly during an ACC meeting. "We told the Japan Olympics officials during the ACC in a meeting that the dressing rooms were set up in tents and washrooms were just 500 m away from those tents, which has created an unsatisfying situation for the players. Also, the hotel rooms are really small, and it is a big concern," the source added.

Asian Games accommodation details

Cricket isn't the only sport where questions are piling up.

Over 17,000 people have registered across the Games, running September 19 to October 4 in Nagoya and the broader Aichi region, which accounts for roughly 11,000 athletes plus 6,000 officials.

That's a much bigger number than expected, and with no traditional athletes' village in place, it's left organisers scrambling to figure out where everyone actually sleeps. The current plan mixes hotels, temporary wooden structures in Nagoya, and even the Costa Serena cruise ship pressed into service as floating accommodation.

Organising committee chief Hideaki Ohmura, who also serves as Aichi's governor, flagged the surge last week, pointing out the Games were originally built around a figure of 15,000 participants under the host city agreement, which is well short of the eventual turnout.

The Olympic Council of Asia has since pushed back on the coverage, insisting things are under control.

"All the 17,000+ athletes and officials that are registered for the Asian Games before the closing of Entry by Name in July have been provided with Games-appropriate accommodation," the OCA said in a statement, adding that preparations remain "on track and progressing smoothly ahead of what promises to be the most spectacular Asian Games in generations."

With less than a month to go before the opening ceremony, organisers now have to prove that claim right. Meanwhile, BCCI's observer is expected to head out to check the cricket-specific arrangements for itself before the tournament kicks off.
