Benjamin Asare replaces Aseako in Black Stars squad for Mexico friendly

Accra Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare has earned a late call-up to replace Gidios Aseako for the international friendly against Mexico on May 22, 2026.

The decision was announced by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on May 7, 2026, as the technical team prepares for the trip and continues assessing the squad.

The move came as a surprise to some football fans, as the Dreams FC goalie was expected to be given the opportunity to showcase his potential and compete for a spot in the team.

Why Carlos Queiroz picked so many new faces for Ghana’s Mexico clash

The announcement did not disclose the exact reason behind the late change, which brings in the team’s number one goalkeeper ahead of the friendly.

This call-up presents an opportunity for Asare to strengthen his position within the team and among the new players, whether he starts in goal or is benched in favor of Solomon Agbasi or Paul Raverson of Ajax Amsterdam.

The 23-man squad features several fresh faces and players who are not regulars, as many of the usual names were omitted.

The squad is composed of star players from both the domestic league and European leagues, closely monitored by Coach Carlos Queiroz, as well as U-23 players who will soon represent Ghana in the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers.
