Tributes for former NRL player dead at 48 after health battle

Ex-Parramatta Eels and Cronulla Sharks player Karl Lovell died on Sunday at the age of 48, following a battle with lung cancer.

The New Zealand-born forward leaves behind his wife Megan and their two daughters.

Lovell debuted in the NRL with the Eels in 1997, making his debut against North Sydney at just 19 years of age.

He went on to play 37 matches for Parramatta over two seasons, featuring heavily in their 1997 and 1998 finals campaigns.

His football career later took him to England, where he played for Sheffield and the short-lived Huddersfield-Sheffield merger side.

Lovell returned to Australia in 2001 to join the Northern Eagles before wrapping up his NRL career with the Cronulla Sharks.

In 2002, he helped guide the Sharks to a preliminary final, where they ultimately fell to the Warriors.

After retiring from professional rugby league, Lovell returned to his junior club, the Toukley Hawks, dedicating his time to mentoring the local community.

“The Toukley Hawks community are deeply saddened to hear that one of our own, Karl Lovell passed away yesterday, after a brave battle with cancer in recent times,” the statement said.
