Manchester United are heading into a crucial part of the summer with the new Premier League campaign just weeks away

After a World Cup summer, focus is now firmly on the domestic season and Manchester United have plenty to look forward to. The Reds are returning to the Champions League and expectations are high as Michael Carrick looks to continue the good form that saw him handed the job on a permanent basis.

New additions to the squad have slowed in recent weeks. However, Andrey Santos, Karl Darlow and Youri Tielemans have all joined the senior squad. Tynan Thompson could also make an impact on the first team after arriving from Tottenham Hotspur.

Both on and off the pitch, there are a number of issues that need addressing. MEN Sport has taken a look at what would be a perfect August for United.

Ticketing fiasco ends

In July, some United fans were left outraged after they were caught up in the club's plan to clamp down on ticket touts. United are now aware of the scale of the problem and how many innocent supporters have been affected by their new strategy.

United say those who were emailed to say their accounts had been temporarily restricted have six or more linked accounts. No sanctions have been handed out yet. But as the new season edges closer, the Reds need to find a solution.

New striker arrives

United's attack has been overlooked so far this summer. Benjamin Sesko will be Carrick's first choice centre-forward, but beyond that, questions remain.

Joshua Zirkzee's future is unclear as he continues to attract interest from Italy. Even if he stays, United need a forward who can compete with the Slovenia international. Danny Welbeck would have been a great signing for that role. He's an experienced striker who has just come off the back of an impressive Premier League campaign.

It's understood that signing a striker is not a priority for United, but Sesko really could do with some support.

Rashford solution

Marcus Rashford said his goodbyes to Barcelona on Thursday and that symbolises a clear end to that chapter of his career. The winger is now preparing to return to Carrington and he will be reintegrated into the first-team squad if a buyer does not emerge.

Currently, there is no exit route for Rashford and staying at Old Trafford this season is a real possibility. If that's the case, the dream outcome would be for his transition back into the first team to be seamless.

But moving him on is still the ideal solution and United will hope a buyer can be found.

Hall signs

United are currently looking weak at left-back. Luke Shaw's 2025/26 campaign should be commended but he cannot be relied upon to play twice a week with the return of Champions League football.

Over at Newcastle, the wheels appear to be falling off a little. Eddie Howe has left and key players like Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon have also departed. For a player of Lewis Hall's potential, staying at St James' Park might not look so attractive.

Hall is the perfect profile for United and if he is seeking to leave the north east, the Reds should be all over that deal. Reports suggest he could cost as much as £70m. While that is a lot, if he is United's first-choice left-back for the best part of the next decade, it would be money well spent.

Third midfielder joins

Many fans are hoping the third midfield signing, were it to come, will be a traditional defensive midfielder. That's not necessarily going to happen as Carrick transitions the club into a more controlled style.

If Aurelien Tchouameni suddenly becomes available, United would not hesitate to join the race. Realistically, a midfielder in the £30m-£50m bracket is likely to sign.

AS Roma's Manu Kone impressed at the World Cup and would be an exciting addition. But time will tell if the Reds will move in on that deal.

Back-to-back wins

Of course, all Carrick will be focusing on is the opening two matches of the season. Hull City away and Ipswich Town at home present big opportunities for the Reds to start the campaign with a statement.

The Tigers are arguably the weakest of the newly promoted sides and United should be winning there if they are to be challenging at the top. Ipswich are no longer managed by Kieran McKenna and the jury is out as to whether or not Gary O'Neil is a good replacement.

Either way, with two newly promoted teams up first, United should be aiming for six points in August.

Favourable Champions League draw

At the end of the month, United will find out their opponents in the league phase of the Champions League. A dream draw would avoid long-distance trips that could throw up scheduling nightmares for the Reds. United will not know until after the play-offs conclude which teams are worth avoiding.

The top two pots are near enough decided though. United cannot face any English teams in the league phase and the Reds will want to avoid big hitters like Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid this early in the competition.

As the old cliche goes, there's no such thing as an easy game in the Champions League. But Carrick will hope for a favourable draw.
