Celtic 'make contact' with free agent striker who was released by Leeds United in summer

Celtic were embarrassed on Monday’s transfer deadline day.

The aim was to sign a quality striker before the 11pm deadline, but the Hoops hierarchy failed to deliver for Brendan Rodgers.

Kasper Dolberg was targeted but he chose Ajax instead, while Chelsea’s David Datro Fofana rejected a loan move to Celtic in favour of Charlton Athletic.

Celtic have been linked with free agent Kelechi Iheanacho, but another ex-Premier League striker has now entered the frame.

Patrick Bamford to Celtic?

The Herald’s Stephen McGowan is reporting that Celtic have made contact with English forward Patrick Bamford over a possible move.

Bamford was last with Leeds United but he was released from his contract via mutual consent only last week.

The Europa League league phase squad deadline for Celtic is tonight (Tuesday) at 11pm, so the club are desperately running out of time to register a new striker.

Bamford is now 31 and has one England cap to his name. He scored 60 goals in 205 appearances for Leeds but was told he had no future at the club by manager Daniel Farke.

Is Kelechi Iheanacho pursuit under threat?

As mentioned, it was revealed that Celtic were trying to sign former Leicester City striker Iheanacho after his release from La Liga side Sevilla.

Iheanacho worked under Brendan Rodgers at the King Power Stadium, and was able to get the best football out of the Nigerian at that time.

However, Celtic may be embarrassed further this summer after a report was dropped by Turkish publication Samsun Gazetesi.

They state that Samsunspor are also interested, while teams from Saudi Arabia have also been credited with an interest.
