Malinga defended South African title with a broken arm

In South Africa, on September 14, 1992, boxer Thulani “Sugar Boy” Malinga defended his national light heavyweight championship title by defeating Jim Murray by a majority decision. Before the fight, he concealed a fracture in his right arm, which he had suffered several months earlier in a previous bout against Englishman Nigel Benn.

Injury during the medical examination

During the pre-fight medical examination, a doctor squeezed both of the athlete’s hands. Malinga later said that he did not dare show the pain. In the bout, he fought mainly with one hand, but that was enough to defeat Murray.

According to TimesLIVE, Malinga said that he sometimes did not feel pain during the fight. After the victory, he successfully defended the national title once more and later underwent surgery to resolve the problem with his arm.
