Root run out (Nicholls) 18 (Eng 116-6)

Quite breathtaking fielding from Henry Nicholls.

Jamie Smith pokes it to point, sets off, and calls Joe Root through for a single.

Nicholls is on the turf sliding on his knees, gathers, and despite falling backwards spins his body round and hits one stump with his shy.

This is going to be tight, I think he might be run out! Joe Root's given himself out - that's a calamity!

Umpire review

Daft singles aren't going to help England's cause, mind.

Joe Root looks like he is struggling to make his ground at the striker's end after some brilliant fielding by Henry Nicholls.

Root is walking off. He knows he's toast. The umpire's will check it.

I feel for Emilio Gay, moving down to number six from opening. What is that going to do to him?

Jamie Smith will now come out. Can I use the word swinging? I think he will come out with the intent to get this scoreboard ticking.

Eng 116-5

Jamie Smith the new batter and he's given an early examination from Nathan Smith who is right in the business end of this day five pitch.

Truthfully, England are going to have to bat out of their skins to last much beyond lunch based on the first few overs this morning.

Some away movement from Nathan Smith, who has been so persistent. I think Emilio Gay was unsettled by the ball in the previous over that flew from nowhere. It was all a bit tentative.

Gay c Blundell b Smith 10 (Eng 116-5)

Emilio Gay nicks off.

Nathan Smith has bowled with real menace this morning and gets New Zealand's first wicket of the morning with a beauty from round the wicket.

Gay has to play to a full delivery angled into his off stump from Smith which then straightens a touch off the seam and it takes the edge.

Eng 112-4

Will O'Rourke fizzes a delivery into the pitch, wide of stump inducing a drive from Joe Root which misses, and a chunk of the surface breaks off prompting the England batter to do a bit of gardening.

A short wide delivery from O'Rourke from is latched upon by Root who waspishly cuts it to the fence four.

Eng 110-4

A rasping, simply unplayable, delivery from Nathan Smith to Emilio Gay which climbed into the England batter from just back of a length.

Gay stumbles away like a seasick passenger getting off a ferry after a particularly rough crossing.

Smith follows it up with one which beats the defensive prod of Gay.

A maiden for Smith.

Eng 110-4

Joe Root edges the final delivery of Will O'Rouke's over.

The Yorkshireman throws his hands at a drive and thick edge which goes over the top of the Kiwi cordon and races away for four.

Eng 105-4

Will O'Rourke starts for New Zealand.

His second delivery is flicked square for a couple by Emilio Gay.

The atmosphere at Trent Bridge - where punters have been let in for free - is relatively subdued
