Scaloni urged Messi to return for Argentina farewell match

Argentina national team head coach Lionel Scaloni said he persistently tried to persuade Lionel Messi to return to the national team for a farewell match. Argentina’s friendly against Benin is due to take place on October 6 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Scaloni told reporters that he believes Messi deserves such a farewell and that he wanted to be present for it. According to him, they wanted to hold the match now because he does not know whether he will remain in the role. The coach also noted that, despite the circumstances, Messi expressed a desire to come and say goodbye to the fans.

Scaloni’s contract

Scaloni led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title and two Copa América victories. His contract with the national team expires in December. The coach said he would meet with Argentine Football Association president Claudio Tapia in the coming days to discuss certain terms and determine whether an agreement can be reached.
