San Francisco 49ers Defeat Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in Melbourne

The San Francisco 49ers delivered a commanding 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Friday, September 11, 2026, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia during the NFL regular-season opener.

Quarterback Brock Purdy spearheaded the San Francisco offense by completing 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and throwing three touchdowns. Newly signed wide receiver Mike Evans made an immediate impact, hauling in six passes for 49 yards and a touchdown, with five of those receptions securing key third-down conversions.

Defensively, San Francisco completely handcuffed the Los Angeles offense, holding them to just 290 total yards, 15 first downs, and a single touchdown. San Francisco spent a full week preparing in Australia to acclimate to the environment, a strategy players credited for their physical execution during the game.

"We were just focused on us," said Dre Greenlaw, linebacker. "We knew what we had to do. We know the standard that we play with.

If they wanted to come in the day before, the week before, it didn't matter at all. We got a standard that we play with, so for us it wasn't even about how they were going to come out, it was about how we were going to come out."

The defensive unit consistently built momentum as the game progressed, halting a crucial Rams fourth-down sneak from the 1-yard line in the third quarter.

"I think it was definitely a matter of us feeling like we got stronger as the game went on versus the opposing team. It felt like they kind of withered away," said Fred Warner, linebacker. "Our plan was great coming out here early and all the resources they gave us to be successful for today is what gave us a chance to win this game."

Offensive players also pointed out how the extended stay in Melbourne helped the team perform at a high level.

"It was definitely worth it to come a little bit early," said Mike Evans, wide receiver. "We didn't complain. We actually enjoyed being here in Melbourne."

Conversely, the Rams faced scrutiny after opting to land in Australia just 24 hours prior to kickoff following a grueling long-distance flight.

"I don't believe (the strategy) is why we didn't play well enough. I really don't," said Sean McVay, head coach.

The matchup marked the NFL's first regular-season contest in Australia, drawing a crowd of 100,021 spectators to mark the seventh-largest attendance in league history. On the roster front, San Francisco wide receiver De'Zhaunn Stribling exited early due to an ankle injury, while tight end Jake Tonges sustained an MCL injury. The 49ers next host the Miami Dolphins on September 20.
