Sources close to Chelsea have dismissed speculation that Xabi Alonso is planning a reunion with Liverpool playmaker Florian Wirtz this summer.

Alonso worked alongside Wirtz during their spell at Bayer Leverkusen, with the pair winning the Bundesliga title together in 2024.

Wirtz's outstanding displays under Alonso earned him a £116million switch to Liverpool last summer, though things have not gone entirely to plan for him at Anfield just yet.

The 23-year-old mustered seven goals and 10 assists for the Reds across 49 appearances in all competitions throughout his debut season in England.

With Alonso landing his first Premier League role at Chelsea, conjecture surrounding a potential reunion has always appeared unavoidable.

One report featured on the BBC Sport website on Sunday claims Chelsea are 'keeping tabs' on Wirtz and could make a move depending on what unfolds with Enzo Fernandez this summer.

Our colleagues at Football London put that to a source close to the west London club and it has been dismissed.

They add that Chelsea are pursuing at least two starting players to bolster Alonso's squad ahead of the 44-year-old's maiden season at Stamford Bridge.

A number of players have been linked with the west Londoners in recent weeks, though the report claims there is no substance to rumours surrounding John Stones, Ethan Nwaneri and Lucas Bergvall, as well as Wirtz.
