The former Ibrox boss has surged up the next boss shortlist - despite walking away from talks last weekendDanny Murphy reckons that if a Rangers return for Steven Gerrard is being held up by a mega tax bill, the Ibrox club should pay up.The Liverpool icon was the clear frontrunner to replaced axed Russell Martin in the Ibrox hot seat having held talks with the club’s new American owners in London. However, the title-winning Rangers boss would pull out of talks with the "timing" of a return to Glasgow among a host of reasons bringing the conversation to an abrupt end.Despite this, the odds have been tumbling on Gerrard performing a U-turn and going back to the Scottish Premiership - as he rocketed ahead of Kevin Muscat and Danny Rohl in the bookies list of candidates. The 45-year-old has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq last season - and former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan speculated that a tax bill could be awaiting Gerrard should he return to work in the UK, putting the brakes on a sensational return. He told talkSPORT: "I never understood the necessity for Gerrard and Rangers to be talking to be in the public domain."I know it's difficult to control, but they employed an England manager without anyone knowing - so if you want to be able to suppress it and control it they can."If Gerrard is back in, why couldn't they resolve whatever it is in their much publicised meeting? I would suspect it is something to do with his contract in Saudi."I would suspect there is some kind of financial adjustment he may have to make by finding himself in the awful position of being a tax payer."Host Jim White then put Gerrard's pal and former Anfield teammate Murphy on the spot about Gerrard wanting to go back, Murphy said: "I would suspect he would, but I don't know all the reasons he would or he wouldn't."It's hard to look past the obvious, which is what Simon's talking about (the potential tax bill), and if it is that then I don't blame him for using his position of strength to put them in a corner. 'If you want me that badly then you pay'."People call it greed, but it's the way football is. Players and managers across the world do the same thing every week."Follow Record Sport on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond. You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers page and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. We're also on WhatsApp where we bring all the latest breaking news and transfer gossip directly to you phone.
