Tennis legend Billie Jean King finally has her diploma.

The 12-time Grand Slam singles champion received her bachelor's degree in history from California State University, Los Angeles on Monday (18 May), 65 years after first enrolling at the school, according to the Associated Press.

King, 82, walked across the stage at the Shrine Auditorium in pink glasses and dark blue sneakers alongside the members of the Class of 2026.

She delivered the commencement address.

"It is never, ever, too late to finish what you have started," King told the graduating class.

She also took the chance to reflect on how – thanks in large part to her impact – the state of her sport looks markedly different than during her days on court.

"Winning a Wimbledon doubles title today is worth close to half a million dollars," King said. "In 1961, I think we won a $45 gift voucher to a local store.

"We can never understand inclusion unless we've been excluded," she added.

King left her graduating class with one final message: "¡Sí, se puede!" – yes, you can.

"It's never too late," King said afterward, "whatever age you are, whatever your abilities are, go for it if you want it."
