Rangers are reportedly poised to confirm the appointment of Steven Gerrard as manager for a second time.

Ibrox chiefs have ramped up their search for a new boss after sacking Russell Martin last Sunday and have met with the Liverpool icon in London this week about a return to Ibrox.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh and right-hand man Paraag Marathe have been spearheading the efforts with Gretar Steinsson - who works as a technical director in 49ers Enterprises football department also said to be involved.

And a fresh report now claims that Gerrard's return to Glasgow could be signed, sealed and delivered as early as today. The Scottish Daily Express report that a deal between the two parties has been 'all but agreed' and it will see the 45-year-old step into the dugout at Ibrox nearly four years on from his initial departure.

Gerrard took up the reins at Rangers in the summer of 2018 and led the club to their first Premiership title in 10 years when they romped to the championship in the 2020/21 season without losing a single game.

However, the England hero moved onto Aston Villa in the following November, where he lasted just 11 months before getting the boot.

Gerrard then headed out to the Middle East in July 2023 after being named as the new head coach of Al-Ettifaq but endured another difficult spell, with the club pulling the trigger on his tenure in January this year.

Earlier this week, the Anfield legend confirmed his desire to get back into the world of football management if the right opportunity presents itself.

Speaking on the Rio Ferdinand podcast, he said: “I think certain jobs and certain clubs would suit my style and the way I like to go about it.

But I've also got time now where I'm not in a rush, where I know the right people that are out there to make me a stronger and a better coach. They're the people I need to find.

"Because if I get the right match with them people around me, I know and I've proved I can be successful as a manager. And that's what I'm working on in the background now.

“But I've had five or six really interesting phone calls since I stopped in Saudi. And I haven't been ready because I haven't got that team set around me.

"And the timing hasn't been right. My daughter's just had a baby. I've just become a granddad. I wasn't ready. I haven't got my staff ready.

So unfortunately, them opportunities or them phone calls have come at the wrong time, if you like. But if the right call comes my way, the right club, the right challenge, and I've got my people set, which I will have at some point, I'll take that challenge on because it's in me. It's in me.”
