Latin America’s Cerúndolo Falls to Musetti at Italian Open

Argentina’s Francisco Cerúndolo saw his Italian Open run end Sunday, falling to home favorite Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(7), 6-4 in the third round at the Foro Italico.

The match was a sharp test for Cerúndolo, the No. 25 seed, who came into the day after a dominant second-round victory over Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo. Against Musetti, however, the margins were far smaller. The opening set turned into the decisive passage of the match, with the Italian holding his nerve in a tight tiebreak before closing out the second set to reach the fourth round.

For Latin American tennis fans, the result was a disappointing end to one of the region’s stronger hopes in Rome. Cerúndolo has built much of his reputation on clay, where his heavy forehand and aggressive baseline game have made him one of Argentina’s most reliable players on the European swing. But Musetti, backed by the Italian crowd on Campo Centrale, was steadier in the biggest moments.

Cerúndolo had opened his tournament with one of the cleanest wins of the men’s draw, defeating Tabilo 6-0, 6-2 in an all-South American matchup. That result gave the Argentine momentum and kept him positioned as a possible danger in a section of the draw already shaken by early exits.

Musetti’s win continues a strong showing for Italian players in Rome and gives the home crowd another major name to follow as the tournament moves toward the second week. The No. 8 seed had also won his previous match in straight sets, defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-4 before facing Cerúndolo.

The loss leaves Cerúndolo to turn his attention toward Roland Garros, where clay-court form and confidence can change quickly. For Argentina, his exit is a setback, but not the end of the country’s presence in Rome. Mariano Navone delivered one of the notable Latin American results of the tournament by beating fourth seed Félix Auger-Aliassime 7-6(4), 7-6(5) on Saturday.
