The move has been surprising, given that previous coach Brendon McCullum was not afforded the same liberties during his tenure as England's Test boss. In fact, his contract explicitly required him to step down as co-host of SENZ radio's Breakfast Show.

Fleming recently stepped down after 17 seasons as head coach of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings before replacing former teammate McCullum as England Test coach in July. It was clear that the BazBall approach wasn't working for the Three Lions, and after back-to-back Ashes losses and a 2-1 defeat in the T20 World Cup, he was dismissed from his duties.

While many names, including former Ashes heroes like Michael Vaughan and Jonathon Trott, were suggested, in the end it was Fleming who got the gig. For now, his commentary assignment for Sky New Zealand will cover India's full tour, which features five T20Is, five ODIs, and two World Test Championship matches starting October 22 in Christchurch.

The ECB approved the dual role, allowing Fleming to remain based in his home country when England is not actively preparing for a Test assignment. Interim coach Marcus Trescothick managed the team during England's recent home series against Pakistan after Fleming requested extra time with his family before taking charge.

How Fleming is preparing for England's Test series against South Africa

Fleming arrived in England on Monday for a 10-day visit to hold key planning discussions with Test captain Joe Root and Managing Director of Men's Cricket Rob Key.

While Fleming provided remote selection input and remained in close contact with Root and Trescothick during the Pakistan series, this trip marks his first formal in-person setup with the leadership group.

Fleming's official on-field stint as head coach will begin with England's three-Test tour against World Test Championship holders South Africa in December and January.

Setting the strategic roadmap and managing player workloads for that series will form the core of his current meetings in England before he returns home for the India-New Zealand tour.

ECB is also moving on from their old regulations since McCullum

It is clear from the ECB's willingness to grant Fleming broadcast permissions that they are ready to take a more practical approach to modern coaching contracts. The Kiwi remains one of the most successful names in white-ball and franchise cricket, having led CSK to a record five IPL titles.

With such top-tier talent already secured, the board appears comfortable offering more flexibility and side engagements during off-season windows. However, the contrast with McCullum's strict initial terms also shows how ECB policy has evolved over a four-year cycle.
