Man Utd news: Ruben Amorim sack update as brutal 'history disappearing' verdict delivered

Ruben Amorim received a stay of execution after beating Sunderland, while a Manchester United legend has suggested the club's "history is disappearing" in the latest news round-up

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim will remain the club's boss for at least another few weeks after beating Sunderland. Tensions were eased at Old Trafford following a third straight home win, though it's been speculated the under-fire boss could still have been fired heading into the international break.

Summer signing Benjamin Sesko scored one of United's two goals on Saturday and has been rightly praised by a certain club legend. Meanwhile, another United alumnus has raised alarm about the club's "history disappearing" after a tragic turn-out for the latest England squad.

There's more positive news, however, amid word the Red Devils are already closing in on a £44m deal in time for next summer. Mirror Football breaks down all that and more in the latest United headline round-up.

The 'crazy' result that would have axed Amorim

After a return of just two wins from his opening six Premier League games and a humiliating Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby, pressure has mounted on Amorim this season. But Saturday's triumph over Sunderland moved the club up to 10th in the table and alleviated some of that burden as club football breaks for the next fortnight.

However, it appears Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos are keeping a watchful eye over the managerial situation. That's after journalist Fabrizio Romano suggested defeat to a high-flying Sunderland side could have been enough to call an end to Amorim's tenure if the scoreline was bad enough.

"What is happening is also that Man United won the game against Sunderland and closed all the speculation, at least for the next few weeks, for Ruben Amorim," Romano said on his official YouTube channel. "So they head into the international break way more relaxed.

"The new goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, finally started and got a clean sheet – and so a very good start for Lammens and a very good result for Amorim. As I told you guys, Man United were not going to sack Amorim even if Man United were going to lose the game against Sunderland. Even in that case, he was not going to be fired.

"That was the plan of Man Utd unless completely crazy things happened, like losing, I don’t know, 3 or 4 or 5-0. But, for example, losing the game, I don’t know, 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, something like that, Amorim was not going to be fired."

£44m signing "almost guaranteed" for 2026

In the latest episode of 'United players thriving away from Old Trafford', Rasmus Hojlund's rebirth has continued in fine fettle at Napoli. That's after the Dane delivered the decider in a 2-1 win over Genoa on Sunday, improving his record to four goals in six appearances since joining Antonio Conte's side on loan.

Given United have already acquired a replacement in Sesko, it perhaps makes most sense to sell Hojlund next year if they can get the right price. And Napoli will have first dibs on his signature after agreeing a £38.2million purchase fee for next summer, having already forked out £5.2m for the season-long loan.

Romano has speculated the former Atalanta's striker's fast start in Serie A this season is already convincing the figureheads in Naples. And unless they pull out of the obligated deal like Chelsea did in Jadon Sancho's case this past summer, it appears the £43.4m deal will indeed be done.

Also speaking on his latest YouTube debrief, Romano said: "Apart from the obligation they trigger or not, Napoli want to keep the player. Napoli trust Rasmus Hojlund.

"Napoli see Hojlund as part of their long-term project, and so it’s a loan with a buy option that might become an obligation, but it’s seen by all parties involved in this deal as a future permanent transfer almost guaranteed."

Utd ico n slams "disgraceful" international record

Save for the example of Marcus Rashford, there isn't a player currently on United's books called up to the latest England squad. And even then, Rashford isn't technically a United player given he's impressing on loan at Barcelona and looks unlikely to ever return.

It was only last year United broke a 48-year streak when they failed to see a single player named in the October 2024 England squad. That pattern has persisted under Amorim, much to the chagrin of former United winger and six-cap England international Gordon Hill.

In response to Thomas Tuchel's latest selection, he wrote on X: "If what I was told is true, that there is not one Man Utd player in the England squad apart from Rashford who is not [at] Man Utd, it is absolutely disgraceful and tells me that my club's history is disappearing. I hope not."

Sesko simplifying life for three Utd stars

It takes talent to recognise talent, and among the litany of United's best forwards of all time, Wayne Rooney ranks near the very top. So it will have been a privilege for Sesko to hear United's all-time top scorer signing his praises this weekend.

It was the Slovenian's quick-thinking in front of goal that put the Red Devils two up at home to Sunderland and sealed the three points. In response to Sesko's latest display, Rooney picked out three team-mates in particular who stand to benefit from his presence in attack.

"I think he’s a handful, and I think he uses his body well, he challenges for balls," he said on The Wayne Rooney Show. "It makes it easier for [Bryan] Mbeumo, [Matheus] Cunha when he’s on, or Mount to make runs in behind him, so I think that’s clearly something they’ve worked on.

"Obviously getting another goal will help him so the win was massive for all the players and for the manager, and it was much-needed."

After opening his Premier League account with a consolation in the recent defeat at Brentford, Sesko has now scored in back-to-back games. Fans will be hoping the international break does nothing to interrupt that momentum.
