Head gets another over, will this pair look to be aggressive against him? Axar pushes to long-on for one. Washington nudges the ball into the leg-side for one more, and raises 200 for India with it. Down the leg-side for a wide, and Carey does well to gather. Four! Lovely shot from Axar, goes dead straight back over the bowler’s head. Across the line now, but picks out the fielder. Washington picks out the sweeper to end the over.

Axar cashes in some width from Starc as he tonks one over extra cover for a four. Now Axar accesses the mid-wicket with a drive. FOUR MORE!! Back of a length now. Slid away to deep square leg for a single.

With two left-handers in, Marsh turns to the off-spin of Travis Head. Axar and Washinton pick off a few easy singles to get started with the over. Australia wouldn’t mind those. Six runs from the over.

Hazlewood with his final over. Seams one in and Axar has no clue. Flies past the top of the stumps. The Aussie pacer has been relentless without being rewarded. Couple of singles from the over. Hazlewood ends with 0/29 from his 10 overs.

Rahul decides to break the shackles. Goes inside out against Zampa and gains a four. A tad shorter from Zampa and it skids through and under Rahul’s bat. BOWLED!!

KL Rahul b Zampa 11 (15b 1x4 0x6)

IND 177/5 in 37 overs

Another over for Hazlewood as Marsh looks to force the issue. Rahul advances, but is beaten again outside the off stump. Hazleweeod has been mighty impressive, but has no wickets to show for his efforts. Now he beats Axar’s outside edge with one that nipped away.

Rahul goes down the ground to Zampa. Two runs added there. Another two runs added with a clip to leg side. Those are the only two scoring shots from the innings.

Hazlewood returns as Australia looks to target new batter KL Rahul. Couple of dot balls to start the over. Rahul leaves the next two before going after one in the channel. Edged and falls just short of a diving first slip. Short has hurt himself going for the catch.

Too full from Zampa and Shreyas carves it through covers for a four. Zampa flights it in again. Inside edge and onto the stumps. Australia gets the breakthrough.

Shreyas Iyer b Zampa 61 (77b 7x4 0x6)

IND 161/4 in 33 overs

Marsh reverts to pace as Starc returns. Over the wicket to Axar, who works one to the leg side for a single. Short and wide from Starc. Shreyas guides it deep cover for another single. Good running from Axar and Shreyas as they sneak in an extra run from an overthrow. On the pads now. Clipped away down the leg side for a four by Axar. Width now from Starc. Axar cracks it through covers for another four.

Short with his third over. Drops it short and Shreyas whacks it away to deep mid wicket for a four. Gift from the off spinner. Length now. Tucked away to the leg side for a single by Shreyas.

Australia need a wicket, and so it turns to Mitchell Starc. He delivers! Rohit looks to pull off the hip, and picks out deep square!

Rohit Sharma c Josh Hazlewood b Mitchell Starc 73 (97b 7x4 2x6)

A fighting knock from Rohit comes to an end, and Axar Patel takes his place at the crease. Exchanges singles with Shreyas to end the over.

Conolly replaces Zampa, Shreyas pushes to long-off for a well-made 67 ball fifty. An impressive knock, he’s been key to this India rebuild. Four! Rohit sweeps behind square for four more! Pushes to long-off for one more

Short for his second over, hits Rohit on the pad, but it has pitched outside leg. Four! Not great cricket all round. Short drops short, and Shreyas doesn’t time his pull properly. He gets just enough of it to beat Zampa, who can only get a finger on it as it runs away. Short again, and Shreyas pulls for one. Another single for Rohit. Shreyas steals another quick single. Four! Bad ball from Short, too wide, and Rohit lofts it over covers.

Fourth over for Zampa. Starts with three dots, before Shreyas taps another single to the sweeper. Drops short, and Rohit pulls into the off-side for a single that brings up the 100-run partnership for this pair.

Connolly again, Shreyas knocks it to long-off. Another single to Rohit through the off-side.

Shreyas seems to be taking his time against the spin. Just the three from the over.

Zampa again, Shreyas takes a single to cover. Four! Glorious cricketing shot from Rohit, steps away and lofts it over covers for four.

Two more singles to end the over.

You wonder how much Mitchell Marsh is ruing the move to bowl Mitchell Owen now. His over provided Rohit Sharma the opportunity to break free, and he has had to turn to the spinners to make up those overs now.

Third spinner in three overs as Matthew Short enters the game on his home ground. Rohit pushes into the leg-side for another single to bring up the Indian 100. Shreyas works another single into the leg-side. Worked through midwicket for one more.

The runs are starting to trickle a little faster for India here. Six singles in the over without much risk.

Zampa again, Rohit looks to hit the ball hard, but picks out the sweeper. Shreyas nudges another single to long-off. Another single to Rohit through cover. Shreyas knocks another single to long-off, before Rohit taps a single to long-on. Shreyas picks out cover to end the over.

Left-arm spin from Cooper Connolly now. It will be interesting to see when Shreyas looks to attack the spinners. Drops short, and Shreyas cuts hard to the sweeper for one. Rohit whips it down the ground, and raises his 59th ODI half-century from 74 balls. It’s been hard work, but he’s got there.

First sign of spin for today, as Adam Zampa enters the attack. Rohit starts by carving him to the sweeper for one. Shreyas takes a single to long-off. Spins past Rohit’s outside edge! Four! Deftly manipulated behind square by Rohit, pushes it past short fine for four.

Rohit glides Bartlett to mid on for a single off the first ball of the over. Accurate bowling from Bartlett as he ties down Shreyas for four dot balls. Straight for the last ball of the over. Shreays swipes it away to the leg side for a double.

Shreyas chips Bartlett over mid on for a four. Rohit joins in on the fun with a hook shot, against Owen. SIX!!! Owen goes short again. PULLED!! More distance on that one. SIX!! Signs of life in the Indian innings. Full now from Owen. Shreyas lifts him straight back down the ground for a four. 17 runs from that over.

Mitchell Owen with his first over of the day. Couple of quick singles to get his spell underway. This partnership has stabilised the Indian innings. But to get ahead in the game, these two will have to up the run-rate.

Bartlett returns with a change of ends. Up against Shreyas now. Couple of leaves from the Indian batter. Full and wide from Bartlett now. Shreyas thrashes it over covers for a four. Not the greatest timing. But a boundary nevertheless. Shreyas goes inside out for a couple.

Starc continues over the wicket. Couple of singles to start the over. Short now from Starc. Shreyas tries to guide it over the keeper. Misses it completely. Shreyas takes a single with a push to leg side. India gets to fifty.

Hazlewood with his seventh over. The Indian batters have struggled to put him away this innings. Shreyas though manages to get a four off him, with a well-timed cover drive. Hazlewood continues to beat Rohit Sharma’s blade. Drinks taken.

Starc over the wicket to Rohit. Jabbed away for a single. Shreyas continues to be put to test. Outside off and guided away to deep third for a single. Rohit adds another single with a pull shot.

Hazlewood chips one in from back of a length. Rohit is beaten on the inside edge. Australia thinks there is an edge. Review taken and review burned. Rohit survives. Fuller from Hazlewood now. Hits Rohit on the pads. Hazlewood is convinced. The umpire isn’t. Australia doesn’t have a review anyway.

Not in control from Shreyas as he goes over point. Not enough power to get to the fence. Two runs added. Starc goes short and Shreyas ducks under it. This is a very crucial phase of play for India and Shreays. Single to close off the over.

Fifth on the bounce for Hazlewood, and Rohit has found some timing! Driven over mid-off’s head for four! Thick edge goes past a diving second slip for another single. Beats Shreyas all ends up on the inside edge now! It’s an action-replay to end the over!

The PowerPlay comes to a conclusion with Australia dominant at 29/2.

Bartlett for his third, strays down the leg-side for the first wide of the day. Rohit gets an inside-edge onto his pads, and can’t steal the single. Goes for the big booming drive, and connects with fresh air. Leading edge lands at his feet now. Steals a quick single through midwicket to end the over.

AUS vs IND, 2nd ODI: Virat Kohli falls for second consecutive duck

Indian batter Virat Kohli was dismissed for a duck for the second consecutive time, in the second ODI against Australia in Adelaide on Thursday.

Hazlewood for a fourth, Rohit is yet to score a run off him. That lack of runs nearly causes a mix-up, and Rohit wants a quick single, but he’s sent back by Shreyas. Four! First runs of the day against the bowler for Rohit, Hazlewood will have to console himself with a moral victory as a thick outside edge flies through third slip for four. Rohit gets a single through covers to end the over, runs coming thick and fast (sort of) now.

Bartlett back for another, and he has a wicket! The pressure tells as Gill runs at Bartlett, and drills it straight to mid-off! Marsh takes a good diving catch at mid-off, and India has lost its first one!

Shubman Gill c Mitchell Marsh b Xavier Bartlett c Marsh b Bartlett 9 (9b 1x4 0x6)

Big blow for India, Gill was looking in decent touch. Virat Kohli is in at three, can Rohit and Kohli put up a partnership here? Kohli struggled with getting off the mark at Perth, he will be looking to do that quickly here. OUT! He won’t get off the mark here either, as Bartlett nips one back in and beats him on the inside edge to pin him on the front pad! Absolutely plumb in front, Kohli doesn’t even both reviewing as he heads back for another duck.

Virat Kohli lbw Xavier Bartlett 0 (0b 0x4 0x6)

Shreyas Iyer walks out at four, dot to start

Hazlewood for a third over. Glorious batting from Gill, who walks down the wicket and caresses the ball through mid-off. Marsh makes a good diving stop to keep it to three, first runs conceded by Hazlewood after 14 deliveries. Rohit hacks across the line and gets nailed on the back leg! Australia likes it, the umpire doesn’t, and we have a review! This could be close....saved by an inside edge!

More testing bowling from Hazlewood, who has dominated Rohit in these early exchages.

Interesting, early change for Australia as Xavier Bartlett replaces Starc. He strays onto Gill’s pads first ball, and he gets clipped to deep fine for a single. Aggressive from Rohit, runs down the wicket and misses a hoick back down the ground. Beats the outside edge, you feel something has to give soon for Rohit here. Bartlett strays onto the pads, and escapes with conceding two through the off-side.

AUS vs IND, 2nd ODI: Rohit Sharma become fifth player to reach 1000 runs against Australia in away ODIs

Indian batter Rohit Sharma became only the fifth player to reach 1000 runs in One Day Internationals against Australia in Australia during the second ODI between the two at the Adelaide Oval.

Hazlewood again, Rohit plays a textbook forward defence. On a length, and Rohit nearly jabs at it again. Hazlewood has been troubling him in a manner similar to Perth this morning. Raps him on the pad now, but it’s clearly too high. Beaten on the inside-edge now!

10 dots in a row for Hazlewood to start. Zipped past the outside edge now! Outstanding stuff from the bowler. Big appeal for lbw, Hazlewood likes it but Australia opts not to review in the end. Brilliant bowling from Hazlewood.

Starc continues against Gill. Gets it at Gill’s chest, he defends to gully. Confusion! Excellent fielding from Mitchell Owen, makes a diving stop at point and throws down the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Rohit has just about made his ground. Four! Excellent riposte from Gill, drives through the vacant covers for the first boundary of the day. Follows it up with a single. Four! Clipped off the pads and now Rohit has a boundary as well! Rohit ends the over with another single into the leg-side.

Far better over for India.

Hazlewood from the other end. Starts on the same line and length he was so impressive with at Perth. Ooh! Hazlewood nips one back in, and Rohit lets it go, it just zips over his off-stump. Beats the outside edge now, terrific start from Hazlewood. Rohit defends back to the bowler to end the over.

Hazlewood starts with a maiden.

Mitchell Starc has the new ball, and he goes full past Rohit’s outside edge first delivery! Good start from the veteran quick. Pulls his length back next delivery, and Rohit jams the bat down to defend. Throws it full again, Rohit pushes at it and gets beaten on the outside edge again. Clipped into the leg-side for a single, and Rohit opens India’s account for the day. Starc hones in on the stumps against Gill, and he defends to mid-on.

We’re almost ready to go at the Adelaide Oval, where Australia will be looking to repeat its new-ball exploits from Perth again. It is likely to be a slightly more batting-friendly pitch today, so can India’s batters produce a stronger showing than they managed last time?

The weather is clear for today, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are headed out to the middle, and we are almost ready for lift-off!

It appears Mitchell Marsh forgot a third change for Australia at the toss. Matthew Kuhnemann, who returned impressive figures of 2/26 in four overs in the first ODI, drops out, and Adam Zampa takes his place.

So India’s top-order has an early opportunity to rectify some of the mistakes it made in the first ODI in Perth. Can Shubman Gill and Co. find some early runs against this prolific Australian attack?

India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj.

Australia: Mitchell Marsh (captain), Travis Head, Matthew Short, Matt Renshaw, Alex Carey (wk), Cooper Connolly, Mitchell Owen, Mitchell Starc, Xavier Bartlett, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood.

Mitchell Marsh has won the toss, and he opts to bowl first!

“Anytime we get a chance to win a series, it’s an awesome opportunity,” he says. Two changes for Australia, Carey and Bartlett in for Philippe and Ellis.

Gill confirms he would have bowled first as well, but happy to bat first as well. “Looking to get plenty of runs on the board, and then find some movement with the new ball under lights,” he says. Unchanged side for India.

“Someone like Hardik is always a big loss. But if we look at the positive side, Nitish is getting some game time and we’re trying to groom him.

“Every team needs an all-rounder, and we’re trying to develop him (Nitish) in that role. So it’s a good preparation in that way. But yes, any team would miss a player like Hardik,” Kotak said.

“...(But) in a way, if we look at in hindsight, it’s a positive that Nitish is getting match time at this level.

“Even before coming to Australia, their preparations were very good. So I think it’s too early to even think like that (worry about their form)..,” he added about the duo that only plays the ODI format now.

“They both look in very good touch to me. They batted really well yesterday. Every net session, their approach has been excellent.”
