Today’s clash will see two of the most destructive opening pairs of this season’s IPL go up against each other: Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma for SRH, and Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya for PBKS.

SRH and PBKS have been the two quickest scoring teams in the PowerPlay this IPL, with both teams going at over 11.5 in the first six.

In a season where the outcome of the match is being decided in the PowerPlay, today’s result could well hinge on which opening pair has the larger impact.

It was a proper run fest the last time the two sides faced off against each other at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Batting first, PBKS posted 245 on the board, a match winning total on most days.

But Abhishek Sharma led the charge for SRH with a century to chase down the total with nine balls to spare, a statement victory for the men in orange.

Will we witness another high scoring encounter tonight?

Pitch number two will be used in today’s game, a strip on which India accumulated 297 against Bangladesh in the bilaterals a while ago.

The small dimensions- just 63 meters and 68 meters on either side, and 75 metres down the ground is even more indication that the bowlers could well be in for a long night.

SRH head coach Daniel Vettori on the eve of the match called the two teams ‘similar’, saying they are very alike in their approach- aggressive and all attacking on the batting front, and damage control with the ball.

Not to forget the last match between the two sides in this very stadium produced close to 500 runs, all signs point to another high scoring contest between two explosive batting sides tonight.

PBKS has looked invincible while chasing totals this year but the same cannot be said about its form while batting first.

In the matches where the side has batted second, the template has been simple- no matter how much its bowlers concede or the opposition scores, the target can and will be chased down, has been the attitude of Shreyas Iyer and co. And its worked for them so far.

Batting first meanwhile, has been a different ball game altogether. PBKS’ bowling unit, which has not been in the best of form all season, failed to defend 222 against Rajasthan Royals and 163 against Gujarat Titans on a tricky surface.

It’ll be interesting to see if PBKS can iron out that flaw should the side bat first against SRH tonight.
