BCCI Breaks Silence On Kohli & Rohit Playing 2027 World Cup: 'Don't Need Any Special...'

With the ODI World Cup to be held next year, the big question over Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli being part of India's plans remains unanswered.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has said discussions on the Indian team’s roadmap for next year’s ODI World Cup are ongoing among various stakeholders, including the board, selectors, coaching staff and players. However, he believes conversations regarding the future of senior players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should remain within the confines of the boardroom.

The form and fitness of the ageing superstars remain under scrutiny, with the World Cup now just over a year away. The rise of the next generation has also increased pressure on the senior players to retain their spots, which were once considered virtually unchallenged.

“As the head of the board, we have a very well-knit team and a lot of experts. All stakeholders are taken on board. Whatever decisions are made involve the cricket committee, the selectors and all other stakeholders, including the support staff, the head coach and the players concerned. There are regular conversations taking place," Saikia told news agency PTI.

Saikia said there is no need for a “special session" to hold such discussions, adding that he is not authorised to share details of those conversations with the public.

“For that reason, we do not need any special session of interaction. This is an ongoing process. Further, I do not think I should disclose anything before the media or the public because these are strategic discussions. I am not authorised to speak about them before the media," he said.

“Secondly, these are matters that should remain within the boardroom," he added.

By the time the next ODI World Cup begins, Rohit will be 40, while Kohli will be approaching 39.

While there is no question about their credentials, with the duo firmly established among the all-time batting greats, their biggest challenge will be not only to score runs consistently but also to remain injury-free, especially with younger contenders pushing for places in the side.
