Nagelsmann's time as Germany boss at an end

Julian Nagelsmann has resigned as Germany head coach following their disappointing World Cup campaign, according to reports.

The four-time world champions suffered a shock defeat on penalties to Paraguay following a 1-1 draw in the last 32 which sent them crashing out of the tournament.

The loss was their first-ever shootout defeat in the World Cup and ensured Germany were not able to set up a last-16 clash with France.

Nagelsmann, who was appointed in September 2023, also suffered a quarter-final defeat to Spain in Euro 2024.

He was expected to remain in charge of Germany until the end of Euro 2028 and previously stated he would stay if the German Football Association (DFB) wanted him to.

After Monday's defeat to Paraguay, he said: "I’m not one to run away. It’s not the first time, but it’s been happening for a while now that we’ve been delivering tournaments like this and yes, there are certainly a few basic things that I don’t want to go into now.

"I’m not one of those people who sits here and says, 'I’m resigning now, just because we’ve been eliminated’. If the DFB wants me to continue then I’ll continue and if they don’t want me to, then they can tell me that."

However, the 38-year-old has now decided to step down from his role, according to reports in Germany.

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has been closely linked with the job since Die Mannschaft’s exit.

Klopp has been working as a pundit at the World Cup and said after the Paraguay match that it was not the right time to discuss his future.

He said in quotes reported on Bild: "I understand that when people talk about the national coach, my name is mentioned. But it’s not the right moment to talk about it, especially not with me."
