Bavuma urges South African men to combat violence against women

South Africa cricket captain Temba Bavuma has called on men in the country to change their attitude towards women and take responsibility for combating gender-based violence. Ahead of a three-match ODI series against Australia, he said he was troubled by the fear in which South African women live every day.

As TimesLIVE reports, Bavuma described the situation in the country as deeply alarming and recalled that gender-based violence in South Africa has been recognised as a crisis. According to him, it is sad to see people who believe they have the right to control the lives of others.

A call for a change in mindset

The cricketer supported the position of his friend, South Africa rugby captain Siya Kolisi. He previously said in an Instagram video that the country’s men must acknowledge that they are the problem and urgently seek help, otherwise the violence will continue.

Bavuma stressed the need to change the mindset of people who do not care about the lives of others. He added that men must play a greater role in providing for and protecting women.

A demand for systemic change

According to the publication, South Africa has been battling violence against women for years, but despite awareness campaigns, public discussions and specialised police units, many women continue to live in fear. Recently, the bodies of nine women were found in different areas of Ekurhuleni.

Bavuma also joined Kolisi’s call for better leadership from the government. He urged the continuation of public conversations about the problem and said he was ready to take part in them. In his view, systemic changes are needed, and officials must make bold decisions capable of affecting people who believe they can do whatever they want.
