The Premier League was watching on Monday night, and it had every reason to be impressed.

When Kenyan distance runner Edmund Serem crossed the finish line to win gold in the men's 3000m steeplechase at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, he did not reach for the sky or beat his chest.

Instead, he clasped both hands together in front of his face, mimicking a mask in a gesture instantly recognisable to football fans around the world.

The celebration belongs to Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres, and Serem made no secret of where he borrowed it from.

"My celebration is about my favourite Arsenal footballer, the best striker in the world," he said. "I have never met him, but maybe one of these days it will happen."

The moment did not go unnoticed. The Premier League's official account picked up on the story, highlighting how a celebration born on a football pitch in England had made its way to a track in Scotland.

Serem was not the only athlete to borrow the gesture at these Games. Emmanuel Eseme repeated the same celebration after winning the men's 100m at the Commonwealth Games, showing the reach Gyokeres' signature move now has across sport.

What does Viktor Gyokeres' Mask Celebration Mean?

The signature move by Gyokeres has turned into one of football's most recognisable moments.

As for where it came from, the striker offered a clue in an Instagram post back in June 2024, writing: "Nobody cared until I put on the mask."

The phrase echoes the words of Bane, the villain from the Batman film *The Dark Knight Rises*, who declares: "No one cared who I was until I put on the mask."
