US Open 2025: Novak Djokovic continues to defy age as he completes Grand Slam semi-final sweep at 38

Novak Djokovic is never one to rule out, and that continues to ring true for the 38-year-old.

The Olympic tennis champion is into the semi-finals of the 2025 US Open, coming through a three-and-a-half-hour battle to beat last year’s runner-up and Paris 2024 doubles bronze medallist Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.

Though Djokovic has played little tennis this season – he has only competed in four non-mandatory tournaments in 2025 – he is still proving his quality, especially on the Grand Slam stage.

At 38 years and 94 days old, the Serbian becomes the oldest man in Open Era history to reach the semi-finals of all four majors in a single season. Having fallen to one of the top two seeds in each of those final four matches, he now faces world number two Carlos Alcaraz in a rematch of the Paris 2024 gold medal match.

“I don't feel very fresh at the moment, but hopefully in two days it will be different,” Djokovic said in his post-match press conference in the early hours of Wednesday (3 September). “It's not going to get easier: I'm going to try to take one day at a time, really take care of my body, try to relax and recover.

“The next couple of days is really key for me to get my body in shape and ready to battle five sets if it's needed. I just would really love to be fit enough to play potentially five sets with Carlos. I know that my best tennis is going to be required, but I rise to the occasion. Normally I like to play the big matches on the big stage.”
