Atlanta '96 Gold Felt Like World Cup, Says Lawal

Garba Lawal, a member of Nigeria’s historic 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning football team, has told PUNCH Sports Extra that the Dream Team’s triumph in Atlanta remains the closest feeling to winning the World Cup, describing the achievement as the pinnacle of his football career.

The 52-year-old insisted that the achievement cannot be compared with anything else Nigerian football has produced.

Nigeria fielded a golden generation of players between 1994 and 1998 who could compete with any team in the world, reaching the World Cup on both occasions but falling short at the knockout stage each time.

In between those campaigns, however, the Olympic Eagles won football gold at the 1996 Atlanta Games, a feat Lawal rates above what a World Cup run could have delivered.

“It is similar because it was special. We were the first African country to do so before Cameroon did it in 2000,” Lawal told PUNCH Sports Extra.

“Nobody gave us a chance to win that football event, and when you think of the quality of the opponents we played against as well, look at the calibre of players Brazil had.

“They had Bebeto, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Juninho and many others. When it came to Argentina in the final, they had Simeone, Zanetti, Crespo, Ortega and others. The Mexican team also had some world-class players, including their goalkeeper. There were a lot of quality players, but we had belief and luck. We did our best, and we were lucky.”

Asked how the squad marked the achievement afterwards, Lawal downplayed talk of a wild celebration, explaining that the team’s overriding instinct was simply to return home after a long camping period that had begun in Enugu before the squad travelled through Dallas and Florida en route to Atlanta.

“There was nothing special about how we celebrated,” Lawal said.

“Everyone wanted to go home. Some players wanted to join their new clubs. What mattered to us, and what we remember with pride, is that gold medal.”

August 3, 2026, marked thirty years since Nigeria’s Olympic football team beat Argentina 3-2 in the final at Sanford Stadium, Athens, Georgia, to become the first African nation to win the event.
