Former Southampton defender Jan Bednarek and his family reportedly went through a frightening robbery at their home in Portugal on Friday night. According to Portuguese media reports, an armed intruder entered the property in Porto and threatened the Polish international with a knife before escaping with jewellery worth around €150,000 (£130,000). The incident reportedly happened at around 9.30pm when the footballer returned home with his wife Julia and their daughter after visiting a restaurant. Thankfully, Bednarek and his family were not physically harmed during the incident. The Portuguese police were first called to the scene before the case was handed over to the Policia Judiciaria for further investigation. The 30-year-old centre-back, who currently plays for FC Porto, has not yet spoken publicly about the robbery. His wife Julia has also remained silent after earlier sharing social media clips from the couple’s visit to an art gallery just hours before the shocking incident.

Reports have claimed that the burglar was carrying a knife when Jan Bednarek unexpectedly arrived home with his family. The intruder allegedly threatened the footballer before fleeing the property with expensive jewellery. Authorities are now investigating how the suspect entered the house and whether the family may have been specifically targeted. “An intruder armed with a knife reportedly threatened the Polish international before escaping with €150,000 (£130k) in jewellery”, a report by The Sun read. The former Southampton FC player joined Porto in July last year after spending eight seasons in England. During his time with Southampton, he became a regular in defence and also had a short loan spell at Aston Villa FC in the 2022-23 season. His temporary move to Villa attracted attention after he described the Midlands club as a bigger opportunity in his career, comments that upset many Southampton supporters at the time. Bednarek has also represented the Poland national football team on the international stage. He played in the 2018 and the 2022 FIFA World Cups and featured in two UEFA European Championships. The experienced defender recently celebrated winning the Portuguese league title with Porto before this frightening incident at his family home. Police investigations are continuing, but no arrests had reportedly been made at the time of writing.
