Clones Town FC votes to rename John Delaney Park

Monaghan soccer club Clones Town FC confirmed that they will no longer be using the name 'John Delaney Park' for their club grounds.

The decision comes following an EGM at the club on Thursday evening, as club members voted to cease using the name for the former FAI chief executive, who departed from his role back in 2019.

The grounds at Carn were opened in 2009 and officially named after Delaney in August 2013.

In a statement shared on social media, the Monaghan club said that, "following an Extraordinary General Meeting held on Thursday 23 July 2026, members of Clones Town Football Club voted to cease using the name 'John Delaney Park' for club grounds.

"The club sincerely acknowledges the significant support and contribution made by John Delaney during an important period in its development. We remain genuinely grateful for that support, and the role John played will always be recognised as an important part of the club's history and development."

The statement continued by refuting rumours regarding the rationale behind the decision.

"The club also wishes to clarify that reports suggesting the name of the grounds was affecting our current planning application were incorrect. The planning application played no part in the motion or the decision made by members."

The club grounds will now be known as Clones Town FC Grounds, Carn, Clones.
