Coco Gauff confirms what she plans to do next after her US Open defeat to Naomi Osaka

Coco Gauff suffered a straight sets defeat at the hands of former world number one Naomi Osaka to crash out of the US Open.

Gauff has struggled throughout the US Open this year and the entire North American hard court swing, with the serve a particular weakness.

Although her serve appeared to be improved, it was not enough to beat Osaka, who has now been predicted to win the US Open.

Tennis fans have all agreed what Gauff needs to do next, and now she has revealed what her plans are going forward.

Coco Gauff reveals her plans for after the US Open this year

After Osaka beat Gauff, 6-3 6-2, it confirmed that she has not reached a single semifinal throughout the entire North American hard court swing.

Many people want the world number three to now take some time away from the court, but Gauff suggested in her press conference that she has no time to do that with the Asian swing coming up.

However, with her Grand Slam season now over, Gauff revealed in her press conference that she will be trying to have a similar mindset that helped her succeed in 2024.

“I have no choice but to do a training block between now and Beijing, it’s just the next tournament that I am signed up for,” Gauff said in her post-match press conference. “I have said this every year, after the US Open for me it’s just improvement mode and to get ready for Australia.

“I had good results last year after the US Open and I think that’s because – I don’t want to say didn’t care because those tournaments deserve effort – but it’s just your mindset is different once the Slams are over.

So whatever happens for the rest of the year, I just want it to be improvement. I don’t care results wise.

“Last year if you told me I would go win in Beijing, and WTA Finals, I would have been like whatever because I didn’t really care going into it. So I am probably going to have that same mindset and if I do well, I’ll do well, like I did last year and if not, then not. But for me the main improvements that I get are from how I do at the Slams.”

How many ranking points does Coco Gauff have to defend this year?

Gauff won Roland Garros in June, which is her second major singles title, but she has only won three Grand Slam matches at Wimbledon and the US Open combined.

There are now three big tournaments this year for Gauff to play, but she has a significant number of ranking points to defend from them.

The Asian hard court swing was a very successful part of the season for her last year, with Gauff winning the China Open and reaching the Wuhan Open semifinals.

Gauff then went on to win the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, a tournament she is yet to be confirmed to qualify for.

The China Open will be the next tournament for Gauff, who will continue working with new coach Gavin MacMillan.

Gauff is all but qualified for the WTA Finals this year, as she is third in the race and a Grand Slam champion from this year.

Her next tournament at the WTA 1000 event in Beijing will begin on Wednesday, September 24.
