Liverpool will be watching the progress of Marc Guehi over the coming weeks whilst the possibility of a summer transfer still exists. The Crystal Palace captain's current contract now expires in less than 12 months, which could open the door to a deal whether imminently or down the line.

Whilst great focus has been placed on Alexander Isak amid the striker's wish to leave Newcastle United, Liverpool are still seeking a new central defender. Both signings combined could elevate the club's spending in summer 2025 to around the £450m mark.

But in Guehi's case there is the chance to be patient as there is no indication he will renew terms at Selhurst Park. Instead he could end up available for free next summer.

In the month that remains of the summer transfer window, Palace may make the call to take this last-ditch opportunity to cash in, even if it means losing their leader.

The England defender too will be considering what is correct for him, just one year out from the World Cup. There is still much uncertainty at Selhurst Park that could influence the defender's thought process.

A huge story this summer has been that of Palace's battle with European football's governing body, UEFA, and the right to compete in next season's Europa League.

Oliver Glasner's team earned the opportunity to do so when they won the FA Cup back in May but UEFA have since deemed them to have broken multi-club ownership rules over a minority owner's link to French club Lyon. As a result they may be dropped down into the Europa Conference League.

But Palace have not accepted this verdict and have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Their say in the matter is set to arrive on Monday, August 11.

Liverpool target Guehi, and any other player linked with moves away from Palace, could therefore be looking towards this new verdict before making their intentions clear. The prospect of performing well in a higher-level competition might grant English players the edge in being chosen by Thomas Tuchel for the national team squad.

For now, Guehi remains a Palace player training for the new season. Coincidentally this begins on Sunday, August 10 at Wembley Stadium when the Reds and Palace meet in the Community Shield showpiece.

Glasner had confirmed his captain was absent from their weekend friendly vs Crawley Town due to injury though this has proven only to have been a minor issue as the German manager has decided to include Guehi in another friendly this Tuesday afternoon.

Palace are playing an unconventional double-header vs FSV Mainz 05, with both fixtures only an hour in length. Glasner has two squads to play both fixtures and Guehi lines up in the second at 2:20pm.
