Ricky Hatton inquest

An inquest into Ricky’s death is expected to start after 12pm at Stockport Coroner's Court.

The 46-year-old former boxing world champion was found unresponsive by his manager Paul Speak, at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

The inquest opening in October last year heard a provisional cause of death given as hanging.

Tyson Fury's heartbreaking response

Freddie Flintoff shares 'guilt'

Freddie Flintoff has paid tribute to Ricky Hatton and spoken about the 'guilt' he feels over the late boxer's death.

On Piers Morgan Uncensored, he gave an emotional interview and said: "There’s almost a guilt… How people didn't know? And the one thing I found in recent years, over the past few years, it's happened to more and more people.

"With Graham Thorpe in cricket who [was an] absolute great man, someone who is thought of so dearly by everyone who played with and everyone he’s coached. You just feel like, if only we would have known. But you know it’s terrible.”

Ricky Hatton's brother opened up

Ricky Hatton’s younger brother Matthew admits he was “always worried” about the boxing icon’s mental health. Matthew, 44, opened up about his brother’s death, saying he was concerned for Ricky given his past mental battles but said he did not believe Ricky would take his own life.

He explained: “I don’t think we ever did [think he would take his own life]. I’ll be honest, I’ve always worried. I spoke with my partner all the time [about him] and we did worry a lot about Richard, obviously [with him] doing a lot of interviews and stuff like that.

The 46-year-old was a huge Manchester City fan and his connections with football went further than just the Etihad Stadium. Hatton worked alongside former England star Gascoigne on a speaking tour, where the two sportsmen bonded over their similar personalities.

“I did a couple of venues with him – what a shame, a great guy, a great character,” Gascoigne told FourFourTwo Magazine. “He was like myself – he gave his time up for anybody and he’d give his last penny away. It was heartbreaking.”

Ricky Hatton's final hours

Ricky Hatton was said to have “appeared well” when visited by family just days before his death.

His manager and long-time friend, Paul Speak, found the former champion unresponsive at his home in Gee Cross, Hyde, on September 14, as the pair had been due to travel to Manchester Airport for a flight to Dubai.

The hearing was told Hatton had last been seen by relatives two days earlier, when he seemed in good spirits, before returning home. He then failed to attend a scheduled event the following day.

'Heartbroken isn't the word'

Ricky Hatton's son Campbell paid tribute to his dad, saying: "Heartbroken isn't the word.

"Everybody has always said I was your double - never a truer word said. Looked up to you in every aspect of life.

"Can't explain how much I'm going to miss the laughs we had and all the good times, which I will remember forever. Just can't believe we won't have any more. Love you, Dad."

Who was Ricky Hatton

Ricky Hatton was a British professional boxer and former world champion, widely known for his aggressive body punching and relentless pressure in the ring.

Born in Hyde, Greater Manchester, he held multiple titles at light-welterweight and welterweight, including championships under the WBA, IBF and IBO.

Hatton became one of the UK’s most popular fighters, famously facing the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao during his career.

Inquest opens today

An inquest into the death of former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton will be held on Friday.

A provisional cause of death had been given at a pre-inquest hearing, when brief details into the death of the 46-year-old were made public.

Hatton was last seen by his family on September 12 when he appeared "well", Stockport Coroner's Court heard. On the morning of Sunday 14, his manager Paul Speak, arrived at his home in Hyde, Tameside, to take him to Manchester Airport to catch a flight to Dubai. Mr Speak found Mr Hatton "unresponsive".
