Shubman Gill becomes first Indian captain to score 1,000 Test runs within a year, breaking Sachin Tendulkar's record.

Shubman Gill has become the first Indian captain to score 1,000 Test runs within the span of a year. The 26-year-old reached the milestone against Afghanistan in the only Test in New Chandigarh, becoming the 11th to do so. There were only 351 days between Gill’s first match as India’s Test captain and the match where he scored his 1000th run, breaking the record of batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who took 405 days.

Overall, Gill is the 11th Indian captain to score 1,000 Test runs. In terms of innings, he was the second-fastest with 15, only behind the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, who did it in 14 innings.

Indian captains with 1,000 or more runs in Test cricket

Gill assumed the Indian Test captaincy in June 2025 during the demanding away series against England. He replaced Rohit Sharma for the armband and seamlessly took ownership of the crucial, Virat Kohli-trademark, number four position.

His tenure was immediately stamped with authority through a spectacular 147 on his captaincy debut at Leeds, which he followed with a historic twin-century masterclass of 269 and 161 at Birmingham. He continued to anchor the middle order with a composed 103 at Manchester and later delivered a flawless unbeaten 129 against the West Indies in Delhi.

At the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Gill achieved the landmark with three consecutive half-centuries against Saleem Safi. With it, he also reached his half-century for the match.

While he continues to remain out of the T20I squad, Gill is becoming impregnable in Tests and ODIs both as a captain and the star opener. Just like Kohli, he seems to understand that if he can maintain this batting consistency, it would be hard to dislodge him for any competitor.
