Arsenal vs Man Utd Prediction: WSL Preview

We look ahead to Saturday night’s WSL game at the Emirates with our Arsenal vs Man Utd prediction and preview. Eva Olid’s side will be hoping to stop the rot while the Gunners look for their first home win of the season.

Arsenal vs Man Utd: The Key Stats

According to the Opta supercomputer, Arsenal are set for their first home win of the season, emerging as victors in 62.6% of the 10,000 simulations.

Arsenal are unbeaten in 19 WSL games and could set their outright longest unbeaten streak in the competition this weekend (W14 D5).

Manchester United have lost their opening two league games for the first time since their debut WSL campaign in 2019-20.

Heading into Matchday 3 of the 2026-27 Women’s Super League season, Manchester United travel to the Emirates in desperate need of a response after making the worst start to a WSL campaign in the club’s history.

Arsenal, however, have frustrations of their own to address. Renée Slegers’ side were held by newly promoted Crystal Palace last time out and return to the Emirates still searching for their first home win of the season. With crucial fixtures against Chelsea and Manchester City on the horizon, as well as the added demands of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, three points already feels particularly important.

The Gunners’ overall form, however, remains formidable; Slegers’ side have not lost a WSL match since October last year, while she is yet to experience a home league defeat as Arsenal head coach (W16 D4).

Another game without defeat would see Arsenal equal the third-longest unbeaten home run in WSL history, matching Manchester City’s 20-game sequence between November 2021 and October 2023.

For Eva Olid’s Manchester United, the urgency for a return of form is considerably greater.

While the Red Devils have lost their opening two league matches it is the manner of those defeats that will perhaps concern the fans the most.

United have already conceded a league-high seven goals. Before this season, they had never shipped more than three across their opening two matches of a top-flight campaign. That makes a trip to the Emirates a particularly daunting assignment.

Only Charlton Athletic this season (5) have ever taken fewer shots across the opening two games of a WSL season than United this term (6).

But it is at the other end of the pitch where the numbers really underline the scale of the problem for Olid.

The Red Devils have faced the joint-second most shots on target in the WSL this season (15) and have committed the most errors leading to shots (7) across Europe’s big five leagues.

United currently also rank bottom of the WSL for goals conceded (7), while their 37 shots faced ranks 11th, and their 4.2 expected goals against (xGA) 12th. Six of those seven goals shipped have come from inside the penalty area – also the worst record in the division.

There have been problems from dead-ball situations, too. Olid’s side have already conceded two goals from corners and two from set plays, ranking 12th in the league for both measures.

And the vulnerability to concede has not been confined to one period of a match. They have conceded three first-half goals and four after the break.

The 5-0 defeat to Chelsea brought many of those problems into the forefront. United allowed 25 shots, 11 on target and 2.94 xG, while producing just two shots and 0.20 xG themselves.

Olid wants her side to play with courage and confidence, but so far she has struggled to get the balance right.

The Red Devils are allowing opponents too many opportunities, while creating very little themselves – a particularly dangerous combination before a trip to away to an Arsenal side capable of dominating territory and possession.

The Spanish manager has now lost her last three league games – one with Hearts and two with United – but has only once previously lost four consecutive league matches as a manager, notably doing so in her first four games in charge of Hearts in September 2021.

While United are searching for answers, Arsenal can take encouragement from the early impact of a summer recruitment drive designed to refresh Renée Slegers’ squad.

And perhaps no arrival carries more intrigue than Georgia Stanway, back in the WSL after four trophy-laden seasons with Bayern Munich.

The England midfielder returned home having established herself as one of Europe’s outstanding ball-progressors; from 2022-23 onwards, she completed more passes in the opposition half (2,919) and more passes ending in the final third (1,495) than any other player in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

It has not taken her long to start exerting that influence in north London.

On her Arsenal league debut, Stanway attempted 114 passes, becoming the first midfielder in WSL history to attempt 100 or more passes on their debut for a club.

She also attempted a league-high 51 passes into the final third, completing 39, as Arsenal’s play repeatedly flowed through their new No. 4.

And importantly, that influence has continued beyond the opening weekend.

Stanway leads all WSL midfielders for successful passes this season (194), while only Chelsea’s Keira Walsh (19) has been involved in more shot-ending open-play sequences among midfielders than Stanway’s 17.

Arsenal teammate Mariona Caldentey is just behind on 16, highlighting how influential that pair have already become in Arsenal’s build-up and chance creation.

After four years away from the WSL, Stanway has quickly become one of the players setting the rhythm for this new-look Arsenal side.

Against a United team struggling to prevent opponents progressing into dangerous areas, her ability to control possession and turn that possession into attacking sequences could be particularly important on Saturday.

At the other end of the experience scale, Lisa Baum has made an equally eye-catching introduction.

The 19-year-old arrived from RB Leipzig after scoring six Bundesliga goals last season and immediately announced herself by scoring Arsenal’s winner on her WSL debut.

In doing so she became just the third teenager (19 years and 285 days) to score on her league debut for the Gunners, following Gilly Flaherty and Carla Humphrey.

Baum also recorded 10 touches in the opposition box on the opening weekend, a total bettered by only four players in the competition.

It is a small sample, but her directness offers another dimension to an Arsenal attack that has so far struggled to turn dominance into goals.

If Arsenal’s opening two matches have demonstrated anything, it is that territorial dominance does not always translate into goals.

That was taken to the extreme against Crystal Palace. Arsenal recorded 70 touches in the opposition penalty area, the most by a team without scoring in a WSL match since the Gunners themselves against Yeovil Town in April 2018.

They also completed 289 passes in the final third – their second-most in a WSL game and recorded an extraordinary 97% field tilt, effectively playing the game almost entirely in Palace territory. Yet after 30 shots, they still walked away with a goalless draw.

It reflects a wider theme from their opening two games. Arsenal have attempted 43 shots and generated 3.9 xG, both ranking third in the WSL, but have scored just once. Their 2.3% shot conversion rate ranks 13th, while no side has underperformed their xG by more than the Gunners’ 2.9.

That leaves some of Arsenal’s biggest attacking names still waiting to get their league campaigns up and running. Alessia Russo is yet to score despite attempting nine shots worth 1.61 xG, including seven attempts against Palace alone.

But if there is a fixture in which Arsenal’s forwards might sense an opportunity to change that, it is this one.

Arsenal vs Man Utd Head-to-Head

Arsenal have had the better of this fixture in recent seasons, going unbeaten in their last six WSL meetings with Manchester United (W2 D4). United’s record at Arsenal is similarly difficult, with just one victory from six WSL visits (D2 L3).

That came in November 2022, when a familiar face delivered the decisive moment: Alessia Russo scored a stoppage-time winner for United in a 3-2 victory at the Emirates.

Since then, the goals have dried up. Both meetings last season finished 0-0, meaning neither side found the net across 180 minutes of WSL action.

Arsenal will be particularly keen to avoid another blank on Saturday, and they haven’t failed to score in consecutive WSL matches since October 2023, when they went three games without finding the net.

Arsenal vs Man Utd Prediction

Given Arsenal’s formidable unbeaten run, their strong home record under Renée Slegers and United’s difficult start to the season, the Gunners are expected to come out on top at the Emirates.

The Opta supercomputer gives them a 62.6% chance of victory, compared to Manchester United’s 17.6%. The draw occurred in 19.8% of simulations.
